I have been taking melatonin for the last couple of nights to help me sleep. I have been having difficulty sleeping b/c I am ruminating/working on night and day my money issues.

I have SO drowsy during the day. I even had to take a nap today. I have been taking 5mg time-release. Maybe the dose is too high?

I think that's a pretty small dose. Drowsiness is a side effect I read, I'd maybe try the non time release, so you don't get some so close to waking? It made me feel groggy when I woke and didn't really seem to help that much when I tried it. Have you asked your doctor how much to take; it can interact with meds, etc.

I was told not to take the time released. I take 3mg sublingual and am able to sleep through the night and wake up feeling like I have slept. My dr said that I can take up to 12mg a night if I needed it. So far it is just the 3, but it is nice to know that if I wake up I can take more to go back to sleep. I would definately check with your dr about it, because it can interact with other meds.

Thanks- I was told by my PNP that its okay to take melatonin with lex and wellbutrin. I think you are right, maybe the time release is making me more drowsy as I would be getting it closer to waking up.

Thanks!

blue, that does sound like a high dose from what i remember reading about melatonin. okay, i looked it up at my trusty wholehealth.com site:

Quote:
For insomnia: Take 1 to 3 mg immediately before going to bed between 9 p.m. and 11 p.m. Start with the lower dose and gradually increase it over time, if needed. (Older adults may want to start at an even lower dose of 0.3 to 0.5 mg.) In general, the lower dose (1 mg) may prove effective if you have trouble falling asleep, but a higher dose (3 mg) may be necessary if you have difficulty staying asleep.
