I have an 11yr old son who is severely autistic. He has severe behavioral issues (hyperactivity, impulsiveness, etc) and sleep problems. He can rarely get to sleep without medication and wakes frequently during the night.

Over the past several months we have had a major problem with him waking in the middle of the night and either trashing the house or worse yet-getting out of the house and wandering the neighborhood. Obviously this is not safe. We have double deadbolt locks on the doors (requiring a key to get in or out). He has found the keys and let himself out. While the keys are now better hidden, he now has taken to getting out through windows. We have tried locking him in his room. We have been told we are not allowed to do that and he still gets out the window anyway. We are at a loss as to what to do to keep him safe and also allow each of us in the household to get SLEEP at night.

He is currently taking Clonidine and melatonin to get to sleep. His developmental pediatrician has suggested stopping these medications and trying Trazodone as a means of getting him to sleep/keeping him asleep at night. Because of his age, and inability to communicate how the drug could be affecting him, this is of concern; especially given that this is an anti-depressant.

I am hoping to find anyone who is familiar with this drug, particularly used by children.

I've used it, but I'm 24, and I really felt it worked very well to get me to sleep as well as really minimising the anxiety, which was a huge issue in my life

My son took it (he has ADHD and bipolar) but the trazadone didn't really help him sleep so he stopped taking it.

it does nothing for me regarding either sleep or depression or anxiety or anything else. For me it's a costly nothing. Well not costly exactly, it's pretty cheap but still it was wasted money.

To be fair to it though, literally NOTHING helps me sleep.

Have you tried Hyland's Calms Forte? It's OTC and helps my insomniac son quite a bit (he's 9 and I suspect ADHD but it hasn't been confirmed yet)
