Hi everyone,

I've recently (about 4 weeks ago) started on 60 mg's of cymbalta for depression. Besides for feeling ill at first/still not really being hungry, i've been having the strongest urges to SI - and I haven't done this in aprx one year. They seem different than they use to be too though.. more chemical.. more intrusive.. and more constant. I know I've heard that suicidal thinking/behaviours can increase when starting on certain Anti-Dep's, but I always thought that that was only so because when people first start to feel better, they have more energy to follow though on these urges. My mood hasn't improved, and I haven't experienced any increase in energy....

Does anyone have any thoughts/stores/experiences similar to this? Or do people know if this is really uncommon? I know I need to make an appt with my doc soon, but what do I do in the meantime?

thanks so much,
Jacqueline

Hey Jacq.

I don't have any similar stories. But can you call your doc and let him(?) know what is going on, even before you see him? I think this change is really important and he might want you to go off the meds. I don't know how long after you call it takes for you to be able to see your doc. I hope you are able to talk to your doc soon.Do you have anything you usually cut with in your home? Can you get rid of them/it? Putting one more step between you and your ability to harm yourself is important. Keep yourself safe. We are here to support you.

Yes, you need to keep yourself safe. You need to share these thoughts with someone who can look after you. And you definitely need to speak to your pdoc about this too, as he can tell you if it's to be expected. At the same time, he needs to ensure you are safe during this period.
I hope things start looking up for you.
I think I had a similar experience - I was put on an SSRI, and after 6 weeks was admitted to hospital following an OD. I did have a lot going on in my life, so I cannot say it was def the meds, but it is ironic that it happened 6 weeks after I started the meds.
I still battle with those thoughts today, but right now I'm only on Lamotrigine

I would call my pdoc right away and let them know. That is not a good sign especially since you just started the medication.

I hope you were able to get to your p doc. I had the same problem when I was put on Cymbalta and again when I tried to stop smoking with the new pill. I was very suicidal and had to call my T who told me to stop the stop smoking med asap and switch to another SSRI.
Thanks for this!

I started on Symbyax a little over 2 weeks ago and I had the exact same thing happen to me. The suicidal thoughts, not plans though, and the intense urge to SI. I haven't SI in about a year either. I hope you talk to your doctor about it. Tell someone you can trust and keep yourself safe, away from things you could use to hurt yourself. I think mine is getting a bit better, but its confusing as heck. wishing you the best
