I know my pdoc had so much trouble finding any AD's or any other psych drugs that would help me that he went to presecribing me the St John's wart & the SAMe.....both at different times......I was on them long enough to know I didn't have any side effects however neither one did anything for my depression. To be honest, it does depend on the person if it works....you may have better luck than I did......but I can't take any meds without horrible problems......psych, antibiotics, asthma meds, even benydryl. I fear taking anything anymore because I never know how my body will react. I ended up in the hospital 5 extra days last summer due to an alergy to one of the new asthma meds I was given......no one knew it was an effect to the med until I realized it.....my throat got swollen & couldn't talk. I later did internet research on the new med & found out that what I experiences was a rare side effect......but that is me....if it is rare, I will experience it.
If you feel safe, experiment with the possibilities & you may just find what works for you. Debbie

well ... the doctor gave me 3 months of Paxil n didn't even say to come back and see her or anything ... i don't really know what to do. at one point she said i would need to take them for a year as i had the 'depression' thing before ... but umm yeah also i had to practically beg for some imovane (ativan) cos i haven't been able to sleep, she said oh it will just come right with the ADs ... but i don't wanna wait that long and with all the work i have on i can't really afford to have more bad sleep nights ...

It was miserable. I called the doc & he told me it would take a few days for the side-effects to go away. I couldn't wait that long because I couldn't take the time off work, so I quit after 3 - 4 days. But what a miserable & weird 3 days it was. I haven't investigated any other meds yet because the insurance coverage causes a big tangled mess to get through before you can get authorized to see a psychologist or psychiatrist. St. John's Wort has to be taken fairly regularly for about a month before it has any mood-lightening effects. If you're a sun-worshipper, put on extra sunscreen - it can cause photosensitivity & dermatitis. Also, if you have ragweed allergies, avoid it.

Drunkensunflower,
I guess in my simple mindedness, I would take the fact that she gave you 3 months supply in the first place, that she is taking on the responsibility of monitoring your meds....problem or running out of them. This also implies that you are to call her if there is a problem or to call back for a recheck when you are out of them (assuming everything was working fine with your taking of them). Sometimes Dr's don't always say the obvious things that we need to do, assuming that we understand what we need to do given the situation. I guess I would initially call her back & tell her your situation with the drugs she gave you. If she doesn't call back, then if might be an indication that she really didn't mean to continue on with her. If she returns your call & has that working relation with you, then you will know you have support in that area. Otherwise, I might seek out a different Dr....one that is willing to work with you on finding a med that will work for you. Debbie

i think she was really nice ... but i guess in the past i have had the 'call me in two weeks to let me know how it is going' type thing. which i don't need, but i just don't know if she wants me to come back, maybe just wants me to take the 3 months n be done with it. i don't know!! it is kinda embarrassing to ring n ask even tho i know u are right.
perzephone - that is interesting about SJW ... i took 10mg of paxil for the first couple of days n it didn't affect me, then took a whole one (20mg) as dr said, and you are right - i feel like i have the flu and i am hungry but can't really eat. oh well i guess i'll lose weight ![]() |
