My family doc gave me a Rx for Ultram again, since I can't take any of the usual pain meds for my arthritis (kidney disease). He looked it up and said it shouldn't be used with my SSRI, saying it adds to the effect of the seritonin.
When I have taken it in the past it was fine. I don't think I've ever taken more than 1 pill in any 24 hour period, because I don't like taking pill. I don't like chronic pain either ![]() But I had a bad reaction around Christmas when I used 2 pills, one in the am and 1 in the pm right before bed. I was sick, hot sweaty, thought I'd vomit, tummy hurt, sort of like when I had a partical bowel blockage last year and my muscles hurt. Ultram can be taken every 4 to 6 hours in people who are supposted to take it. I looked up the possible reason of 'drug interactions'. all the symptoms fit for seritonin symdrome. I talked to my p doc when I saw him yesterday and he agreed, said I can't take the 2 together at all. It could be life threatening. Ruin my kidneys if muscle twitch/cramps continued and became perminant. Anyone else have any of this, what did you do?

You can't mix ultram with an SSRI like prozac, paxil, or zoloft, among others. Not heeding this can lead I believe to serotonin syndrome, a life threatening ordeal. If you have kidney disease you can't take NSAIDS like ibuprofen, naproxen. You can take tylenol / acetamenophen (assuming you don't take warfarin or don't drink more then 2 alcoholic drinks a day). Your family doc can always step it up and Rx hydrocodone or oxycodone, narcotic pain medications felt to be stronger than ultram but those that take those meds.
