Ambien now comes in an XR. It's supposed to work faster and for longer. And it's for long term use. Has anyone begun it yet?

I was on regular ambien for years (not recommended.) But it "quit" working for me... took hours to go to work and my pain still punched through after a few hours...

Now I'm on Lunesta... I was on 3mg and the nightmares and nightterrors were very bad... so I dropped to 2mg but the nightmares, though not as vivid, as still bad.. and I'm restless during sleep (which may have added to my recent pain flares?) I don't see trying only 1mg due to the nightmares, because the 2mg barely helps me really sleep.

The drug rep for the Ambien XR told me the above about it... and he said that the nightmares from Lunesta don't ever subside (like a lot of meds)

I've heard that Lunesta gives many people a bad taste in their mouth (literal, not metaphorical) New med??? anyone tried it?.

Sky, have you experienced that at all? I take ambien, but I have some samples of Lunesta. Just don't really want to deal with that side effect, if it's common.

Oh yeah.. the drug rep and the MD told me that, but I lost my sense of taste with the injury so I wouldn't care anyway... sigh. heheheh

Oh, maybe the Ambien is a CR? maybe there are a few of them out now??? confusion reigns!

CR sounds right. But I'm not sure, and I'm too lazy tonight to look it up. New med??? anyone tried it?

Sorry about losing your taste. That must be awful. My husband has a very limited sense of taste and smell for some reason. He'll eat just about anything, for that reason. Even when I burn something. New med??? anyone tried it?

Take care,

gg

I had good luck w/regular Ambien & better luck w/10mg of Elavil. Ambien wouldn't let me stay asleep, but the Elavil does - with limited side effects - no bad taste, no cottonmouth, no extended grogginess if I have to be up before 8 hrs. go by. It is a tricyclic antidepressant, though, so it's not for everyone.

I've been interested in Lunesta

I hear that a lot of people get nightmares when taking sleep aids... I end up dreaming a lot, & end up able to actually remember the dreams. I think my adolescent years spent as an alcoholic impaired my ability to dream & the sleep aids re-activate that part of my brain.

I'm allergic to elavil. and most muscle relaxants too btw, which limits me and also leaves me open to increased pain and muscle spasms...

ambien did heighten my dreaming... but it wasn't so terrifying exotic as the lunesta!

I've not tried Ambien or other sleep aids other than Temazepam. I would be interested to hear if there are better long-term sleep aids that actually work. Temazepam is supposed to be a short-term med, but my pdoc told me that it's okay for long-term use too.

As far as nightmares and dreaming are concerned, I take the temazepam for that reason. It keeps me asleep for the first four hours. Otherwise, I wake every hour or so... have a dream then wake up. Without the temazepam, I rarely entered a deep sleep phase.

Yes, it is brand new. We are slowly filling increasing amounts of prescriptions for it at the pharmacy where I work. I haven't heard any feedback on it yet, though.
