I had to go to 3 different pharmacies before I could find my prescription for Ritaln SR, which I take for ADD and depression.

I saw on the Nightly News that there was a drug shortage in the USA. The pharmacist at the third drug store told me that there are loads of drug shortages right now. She turned away two prescriptions while I was standing there, getting my Rx taken care of.

She said that some hospital ER's had run out of Norepinephrine. She said she has never seen it like this, where so many generics and proprietary medications were not to be found anywhere.

I wonder what's really causing this and what's up with big Pharma?

I had to wait to fill all of my Seroquel XR prescription the other day. They only had half of it on hand so I had to go back, but I didn't think anything of it until I read your post.

I can't imagine why there would be a shortage, except maybe so many people are melting down at once lately. I mean, it's kinda rough out there right now, economically speaking. We don't really get the full flavor of it watching the news.

Well, the pharmacist who wasn't exactly a young woman, said that she'd never ever seen such a thing in her whole career as a pharmacist. She can't figure it out either.

Gosh, that's worrying... I don't know what I'd do if my meds ran out. I know how badly I flip out if I just miss a dose or two.

Hmmmm....doesn't seem to be a problem in my area. I just filled all of mine and everything was fine. I take Adderall for my ADHD. Plus other meds. Hope it doesn't hit here anytime soon.

Well, I'm in the UK, so it might not happen here... but I wonder if it's anything to do with the economy? If it is then it might end up here too.

After much research, I have found that the "drug shortage" is being caused by many pharma's merging. Most are occuring in the US, however, these companies do supply world wide. The shortage is happening because there are less companies making the drugs at the moment. They do not expect this to last long. As soon as the mergers are over, the companies will begin to step up previously produced numbers. This is mainly affecting the US at this time, but it may spread into Europe because these companies do produce world wide. Hope this was of some help

This is a verifiable issue within Canada as well. I have heard several theories including the above, but also that there seems to be an inability to gain access to several compounds right now - probably a result of less pharma companies manufacturing. The problem is time = more demand, but right now we are not keeping up with that demand.

The shortage I have experienced has actually been painkiller narcotic related, which i find extremely surprising. Morphine sulfate especially seems to be one that is having issues. I have also seen issues with metoprolol SR, Seroquel, and several stomach medications.
