I just started antidepressants. My doctor mentioned it takes 3-4 weeks to see the effects... Anyone notice any benefits sooner?

Yes Antidepressants do unfortunately typically take about a month before you notice any effects. They need time to work on your brain.

If memory serves I started noticing very minor changes in my mood about 2 weeks after I started my Effexor - things just seemed brighter, but it was definitely 4 - 6 weeks before my mood really started to improve.

You just have to give it time.

I didn't notice much any sooner than that. And significant effects took over two months.
Thanks for this!

I found the effects of my antidepressants really gradual. After about two weeks I noticed that I was starting to have bright moments that punctuated the depression, although it was definitely closer to a month before I was feeling significantly better for longer stretches. Hang in there!

Hello Elana!

Starting an AD med requires a lot of patience and communication with your prescribing doctor. When you first take an AD, it does what it's "supposed" to do in your brain, however, the AD effect comes later and there are varying theories on why and how. But usually it takes on average anywhere from 4-12 weeks to get the FULL response to an AD. Many times people will notice some relief within 7-10 days however. It just depends on how YOUR system responds to the med.

Typically, you should feel some relief within 4-6 weeks and if you don't your doctor may increase the dose and - sometimes - add another med to augment it. Then on the new dose usually the doc will wait another couple weeks to see if you start seeing results. If you do - then great. If you don't your doc may decide to try you on another med.

So, it takes a lot of patience. Hang in there and keep us informed.

Jerry
