Do they help get rid of delusions or just reduce them?

Daicy,
From my experience the antipsychotic removed the delusions. It also allowed me to get to a point where I could recognize that what I was having were delusions and then I could work from there to combat them. Love and Hugs, Tara |

Hi Daicy
Antipsychotics should get rid of the delusions however it will take a fair amount of time before they do. Basically, before you're rid of delusions say after a couple of months on an AP - they will hopefully decrease which is a good sign that you're on the "right" med. IF however after a couple of months on a certain dose they only decrease and haven't ceased completely, you need to discuss this with your doctor and he/she will most likely increase the dose or switch you to a different med if your delusions are not getting any better. It can be a long process due to playing with various dosages to find the right one that equals the remission of your delusions and other symptoms so keep that in mind and try to have patience. If you are on a med and after 4-6 weeks you are still having delusions - and especially if they have not decreased at all - you need to see your doc to re-evaluate the med dosage or the med completely. I hope this helps. Hang in there! Jerry

In my experience antipsychotics help with the voices, but don't do anything for my delusions. Does that mean that I was on the wrong antipsychotic or not a high enough dosage??
