I've taken a couple of anticonvulsant medications (Depakote, Tegratol, Topamax) without problem, but I wanted to know that, is it possible that starting a new anticonvulsant medication can trigger a seizure?
I'm thinking of asking the doctor about trying Lamictal for my mood stabilization (mainly depression to replace the Saphris) Thanks, Andy. |

It is not likely that starting any anticonvulsant would trigger a seizure on its own. You have a complicated med cocktail, though, and taking multiple anticonvulsants isn't typically recommended. The biggest reaction to watch for with Lamictal is the dreaded rash. It's rare, but serious. One medication that has been known to increase the risk of seizures is Wellbutrin, which is often used for depression. Just something to keep in mind as you search for something to combat bipolar depression. If you do ask your doctor about adding Lamictal, which seems like a very reasonable option, don't be surprised if he/she considers dropping the Topamax first.
I hope you find some relief soon. ~Dragonfly
