I went to the doctors yesterday about my self harm. I'm hopefully going to have counselling and I was given citalopram to lift my mood up. However last night I couldn't get to sleep and now I kind of worry that I won't be able to sleep as I don't feel tired. I read in the leaflet that came with citalopram that I read something about insomina, I think it was a side effect. Should I stop taking it and tell my mum or carry on taking it? Please help thanks

Unless it is (or becomes) quite severe, or doesn't go away within the next couple of weeks, I wouldn't worry. The side effects are usually worst in the first 2 weeks and will often start to diminish after that.

Honestly, I don't know. Nobody can answer that question for sure for you as everyone reacts to meds differently.

Citalopram made me sleepy as all get out, and that effect didn't really go away, and I was taken off it, partly because of that, but for other reasons as well.

If you're concerned or have any questions, just give your doctor a call.

Not sure when you're taking it-but take it in the morning. I tried taking my effexor in the evening and had insomnia, but when I take it in the morning I'm fine.

I'm on citalopram and it never caused me insomnia, I've never had any side effects from it really. But a lot of meds have that effect initially. It's a very individual thing how long the side effects last for or if they don't go away at all.

Call your Dr., and maybe you can temporarily be given something to help you sleep until your body adjusts to the citalopram.

I have been taking citalopram for 2 weeks now. I went to the doctor yesterday to get 2 weeks supply. My mood has improved. I don't get mood swings... thanks goodness! I haven't had any bad side effects. I only had a little bit of insomina when I first took them but that disapeared and now I can sleep Last night I was soooo tired and I went to bed around about 10:30pm and woke up around 6am, I had to wake up early because of college. I am feeling better I haven't cut myself. I'm relieved I actually went to get help I hopefully have counselling soon if my referral is accepted.
Thanks for this!

Citalopram can cause insomnia or difficulty getting to sleep. I would continue to take it but call your doc asap and ask about taking it in the morning instead. I know many people who take it in the morning because it's a bit more activating for them. However, if your doc wants you to keep taking it at night, it's possible that this will dissipate over time.

Keep us informed!
