I just read that xanax is highly addictive....... And that it is for anxiety, panic attacks or depression..........Can also cause birth defects ....

Are there side effects....??

Guess I am asking is because "mama's" always tend to stumble on stuff.. And what happened is a pill in AJ's room was on the floor and his girlfriend picked it up and said "AJ this is your xanax".... Well, AJ doesn't take xanax... And she started to explain that she gives half a pill to help him sleep.... SO, the prescription is not prescribed for AJ... Guess it is his girlfriend's prescription....... Does it help one sleep???????ANY can this be a problem for AJ, taking these xanax pills?????

Looks like we might have a walking pharmacy among us.. But then I could be over-reacting.... That's what "mothers" are for...

No one should ever take drugs that are not prescribed to them - it's just dangerous. Xanax is highly addictive. It is a sedative so it can help with sleeping problems, but there are other non-addictive meds that are better for sleep problems.

Some of the more troublesome side effects of benzodiazepenes (drug class Xanax is in) are clumsiness, memory loss, confusion, and depression in those who are bi-polar.

I take a benzodiazepine (benzo) for severe GAD as needed. The drug is highly addictive as noted by Splitimage and has a high potential for abuse.

Benzo's combined with alcohol can cause life threatening conditions and death.

It is illegal to give ones prescribed medication to another.

I would suggest doing an intervention on anyone that is abusing/dependent on medication that impairs one functioning and judgment such as a benzo will do.

You cant control and addict, if this the case. You can control you exposure to another's harmful behavior.

Thank you, thank you, and thank you, splitimage... I agree that nobody should take other's prescription drugs... I know very little about these kinds of meds.. And this info seems to fall in my lap and I try not to over-react and then I seek info from others because I can't hold it in "or is it keep secrets"... or turn my back.. or whatever one wants to call it, I've gotta spill the beans esp if something can be dangerous..
Some of the "potential side effects" is just what AJ doesn't need. Geesh, he finally is working and he doesn't need to get addicted to prescription drugs.. Esp when the pills aren't prescribed for him

I so appreciate you responding... I immediately made a phone call to AJ's dad... AJ's dad's sister is married to a doctor... SO AJ's dad will call the doctor and get the info first hand. He will take the info more seriously from a doctor than from me....

I don't know the amount "mg" of the Xanax she gives him... She says she just gives him half a pill.... I don't know to to believe anymore.. Just concerned.....

And a thank you, thank you, thank you, willcat

Actually AJ's girlfriend moved in about a month ago... He has been seeing her for maybe 2 months... AJ didn't take Xanax, that is until his girlfriend moved in...

There are some other prescription meds that concerned AJ, so he went to his girlfriend's parents and talked to them a bout her taking these meds.. I thought her parents would have done more... Because they I guess they talked to her a few days later and nothing really has been resolved...

And a few days ago I found out about the Xanax... And that she is giving AJ Xanax..... I think she needs more than an intervention... She needs rehab... Some body needs to get her in rehab for the "i think she is addicted" to the other prescription meds she is taking.. And I don't know if she is addicted to the Xanax.. Just for me, there are way too may prescription meds flying around here.......

My fingers are typen faster than I am thinking or I'm thinking faster than I am typen..

I can't believe all of this is happening.......... I just know I've got to get AJ's dad involved because if I turn out to be the reason for their break-up, "should that happen" I will never hear the end of it....

Not to mention uncomfortable to come off of. My pdoc told me I was like one in a million to stop taking xanax. but I just followed his directions in tapering down and it wasn't that bad.
Thanks for this!
