Has any one tried to get off this drug and had sucess? My friend has been on this stuff for close to three years and thinks this stuff is making her more mental. This drug is recommended for short term 1-2 week use. Her doctor told her " it is such a small dose-just stay on it"

I was prescribed Ambien a year and a half ago to get me to sleep and to keep me asleep. It was effective and I planned to stay on it, but then I was prescribed Seroquel at night as well. Pdoc said I might not need both for sleep. I tried cutting back on the Ambien but lay awake for hours again. I went back on it and it took a long time to realize I was sleepwalking and sleep eating. I don't know how I ever found my way upstairs to bed. I split the Ambien. No problems with withdrawal. And over a short time, I've reduced myself to a microscopic piece. I want to give that up too, but when I have before, I have trouble falling asleep again. I've decided it must be an extremely potent drug.......I want to be able to do away with it entirely.

I have been on Ambien in the past. I had to get off of it because it made me sleep eat. I didn't remember that I did it until I woke up one morning with ice cream melted all over myself

I've been on it for 10 years. i take it just before getting into bed, maybe read a little or hang out on pc, but have never had any problems. I don't get out of bed once i've taken it, for any reason, basically. I don't drink (i tell people, 'i can't! I take too many drugs!', it usually gets a laugh). I go off the ambien for a couple of days every once in a while per pdoc, this refreshes the effect.

My friend feels like she's lossing her mind. Having major memory problems, can't remember names, can't get the right word, can't keep a line of thought going, let alone hold a conversation. Her husband tells her every morning about things she's doing thru the night that she doesn't remember-eating, cleaning, cooking, moving furniture and so on. I worry about her, I just don't think this is a good drug for her to be on for such a long time. She has cut the 10mg down to 5 trying to wean off, but can't seem to let go of that last 5mg. It doesn't really work for her anymore either-she takes it about 11PM and is wide awake between 3-4AM

Sounds like she needs to talk to her doctor. She does all that stuff between midnite & 4am & then she wakes up? she's not sleeping at all, then!
