i was talking to my therapist yesterday about medication, and she suggested that i try something for my obsessive thinking (and anxiety). i've been very against going on meds in the past (and she's been incredibly supportive of this), because i've tried about 8-10 different ones for bipolar disorder and it only seems to have made things worse. i've been basically bipolar (and med) free for the past three years, and the next thing i'm trying to work out is this anxiety/obsessive thinking piece.

at any rate, does anyone know of any good medications that help with this? and ones that won't cause any sort of bipolar episode?

I have had a bit of that myself and found some relief with risperidone.

I had the same thing in addition to waking up in the middle of the night every night. I woulld get 4 hrs. of sleep every night. It was horrible. My dr. put me on 600mg of seroquel for the racing thoughts, lorazapam and clonopin for the anxiety, and zoloft for the depression. I believe the seroquel has helped me most of all with the torment of obsessive racing thoughts and the zoloft has helped alot with the depression. I'm not really anxious any more so I just take the tranquilizers as needed. I hope you get help because life is so awful when your'e suffering. PS seroquel can also be used as a mood stabilizer (it's actually categorized as an anti-psychotic, which I am not).GOOD LUCK.

There are some classic meds used for severe OCD like the tricyclic clomipramine (the gold standard for OCD). Luvox is an SSRI used for OCD too along with other SSRIs. Some antipsychotics like the ones mentioned by other posters are used as well for obsessive thinking - however, CBT - Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is one of the best routes to go.

I had severe obsessiveness thoughts. Seroquel in combination with haldol has really helped me. The thoughts are mostly gone. Its like a miracle.
