Oh geez...
Well, let me start by saying I am thirteen, I myself am not on medication but my best friend is on anti-deppresants.
She was just recently prescribed them by her therapist. I'm not sure what specific medication she is taking. She got them last week, I'm not sure when she actually started taking them; but today was when I saw a noticeable difference in her.
She was really happy. That's a good thing, I know; even though it was a little strange to see her so... enthusiastic and upbeat, I am happy that she is happy!!
However, I am SCARED for her.
Before; she could come across as happy to other people, though she was kind of distant. I knew that she was actually severly depressed. Before; when she listened to songs about suicide (that's the kind of thing both of us listen to) she would like the songs but kind of have a nonchalant attitude about them, about death, suicide, and stuff like that...
Is this making sense?
Well, now the medication seems to be making her more enthused about everything, and happy. But she's still her, so she listens to the same kind of music and all. She told me when we were listening to her iPod that she was scared because she was side affects from the meds that made her think of killing herself as a HAPPY thing and she used the words: "Before I would be like, suicide, cool, whatever. But now it's like YAY! Killing myself sounds SO fun! Suicide ROCKS!" she said it was scaring her.
I don't know if I'm saying this in a way that makes sense...
It scares me, too.
I talked to her once when she was feeling suicidal. She was really depressed (obviously), upset, crying, hopeless, ect. But today she was laughing and smiling and saying very enthusiastically that killing herself just sounds FUN and great and that it's amazing and that she wants to commit suicide becuase it just sounds great.
It's like being optimistic about suicide!
She said on the side of her medication conatiner it lists the side affects and something like this was one of them.
She told me, don't worry, she's not going to kill herself, it just scares her that suddenly it sounds so fun, that she is so upbeat and happy about wanting to commit suicide.
Is this a normal side affect? Do people usually act on these?
I just want her to be safe. I'm scared.

She really needs to talk to her doctor as soon as possible. Is there any way she or her mother can call them today?

I third the sentiment that she needs to tell her dr. Increased risk of suicide is actually side effect of some ADs (yeah, ironic, I know), especially in teens.

I'd be very concerned. Make sure she gets in contact with her doctor. You said that she is already feeling "happy". 1 week is a ridiculously short period of time for someone with major depression to respond to an antidepressant. Obviously I can't diagnose, but it is highly likely that your friend is actually bipolar, and the anti-d is sending her into a mixed or manic episode.

She needs to see her doc, pronto. This is an emergency situation.

You're a good friend for caring so much about her. As someone with a mood disorder, I can say that we appreciate kind friends immensely. They can't cure us, but they can make life with a mental illness much more bearable.

I think when your on meds you get more suicidal because life is tougher. But I've never been enthused about suicide, I just have had more intent because life is so difficult. Good luck!
