To everyones knowledge, what is the best medication for this disorder? It's been causing me some real stress lately, and I'm going to a psychiatrist later today for hopefully some medication to just calm me down. I had taking any kind of medication, but it's really just gotten out of hand.
I posted this is Anxiety...no one really had an answer, but LMo did say Lexapro worked wonders. Thanks!

OK...I never ended up seeing anyone with a degree in any kind of psychology...just some nurse pracitioner, and they gave me something called Propranolol. It for your heart! I think she actually thinks I was lying about my anxiety, and just gave me something to keep quiet. I don't know. This drug seems to be for physical symptoms such as heart palpations - which sometimes come around when I have anxiety, but aren't the CAUSE of my anxiety. This is such ******** and I am really pissed.
Gr. Someone tell me this a legit drug used for sudden anxiety and will calm me down quickly.

Hey Hereiam:
Was it a nurse practicioner, or a psychiatric nurse? We've seen a few psych nurses in our state and I was really impressed with them. This drug... also called Inderal, right? I think it's also for blood pressure, isn't it? How IS your blood pressure? Could that have been what she was trying to treat? Can't anxiety contribute to high blood pressure?

Just found this:
Propranolol ( Inderal ) is a antianginal, antiarrhythmic, antihypertensive, antitimigraine drug, and beta blocker. Propranolol ( Inderal ) is not a benzodiazepines,it belongs to a group of drugs known as beta blockers. Beta blockers are not FDA approved for the treatment of anxiety or nervous tension but are generally used to do so. Propranolol ( Inderal ) is also used in the treatment of aggressive behavior, angina, certain types of pain, high blood pressure, migraine headaches, narcotic withdrawal, panic attacks, pectoris, phobias, schizophrenia, tremors,to help prevent second heart attack, and the effects of antipsychotic drugs. This drug is not habit forming and may be taken for months or even years. source: http://www.psyweb.com/Drughtm/inderal.html

Propranolol works well for me, reduces the amount of migraines I have each month, and seems to help turn down the volume on the anxiety I experience.

Paxil CR is what I was given when they 'thought' it was GAD. Come to find out, that's a bad med in higher doses for people that are really bi-polar, as I am.

well medication is different for everyone, there isn't one perfect drug out there for anxiety, because it's differnet for everyone, and all meds effects everyone differently. i can tell you right now the bet for anxiety at the moment for me personally is effexor xr.

For anxiety my pdoc subscribed Xanax, but that was a little too much for me. He switched it to Ativan and I've had great success with it. I'm on 1 mg to use "as needed." I used to cut one in half before going to work as 1 mg can make me sleepy.
Hope that helps ![]()

I wanted to go on Xanax or Ativan or something along that line, but they put me on some beta-blocker that takes anywhere from 1/2 an hour to and hour to work. For me, that is WAY too long. I don't know if the med works or if I am just over it by the time I feel better. But I'm afraid to go back and ask for something different, because they wanted to do bloodwork (procedure when someone comes in for anxiety/depression) and I...well, lets just say I almost freaked out when she simply mentioned it an almost started crying and stuff. Yea.
So...I guess I wait it out. ![]()

Maybe we can help brainstorm some strategies about getting the blood work done? Have you told them your concerns?

Yea I told them I was terrified, but you know doctors. They hear it all the time, and could really care less.

I know a lot of meds that aren't used for psych meds actually can help. You know like depakote is for seizures but is prescribed for a mood stabilizer...there's a lot of them like this out there.
Try to hang in there with this drug. You're just starting out and may take some time for your body to get used to it.
