While on Effexor I developed difficulty hearing to the point where I had trouble understanding what people were saying if there was a lot of ambient noise. I also had trouble hearing on the phone. I experienced a great deal of "hissing" in my ears to go along with the Effexor induced brain zaps. After discontinuing Effexor five months ago, my hearing improved to the point where I'm not so hindered by ambient noise & it's easier to hear on the phone. Unfortunately, the hissing sound (kind of like a cross between the sound of high power lines and the sound of soda pop bubbles hissing in a can) is still with me & it's quite bothersome. Has anyone else experienced hearing problems caused by Effexor? If you had hearing problems caused by Effexor and are now off Effexor, did your hearing return to normal and if not, what happened? Did your doctor give you any insight to the problem? Thanks!

I feel Remeron might have contributed to a hearing loss for various reasons. Even though I discontinued everything last year, while I think things have improved, I don't think my hearing will ever get back to 100%.

I also developed tinnitus from other drugs which has not gone away. It sounds like that is what you are talking about right in addition to the hearing loss?

As an FYI, I was on a cocktail of meds for several years so my situation might be different from yours. As to your potential for complete healing, it depends on so many things.

A primary care physician thought the tinnitus might be permanent. But I have heard of other people saying that theirs completely cleared up.

Other than the primary care physician's comments on tinnitus, I got no help as far as my hearing loss. The typical speech was the drug had nothing to do with it. I will leave it that and let you draw your own conclusions.

I hope that you are still active on the forum as I would like to talk to you. I am 30 years old living in Europe, Denmark. I have exprienced the exact same thing as you after ending my Effexor treatment about six weeks ago. I have a constant hissing in my ears exactly as you describe it. I would love to hear from you. How are you doing, do you still have the hissing and what have you done about it? I can see that you feel the same way as I do. Kind regards Thomas
