I was just prescribed Risperdal about a week ago, and already having some side effects, ( i.e. extremely thirsty, very hungry, ). I just wanted to know if anyone else has taken this medicine and had any side effects....

Oh yes - Risperidal has some potentially awful side effects. I didn't get thirsty or hungry on it. I started lactating on it, and it's seriously messed up my periods. It's also caused me to have a flattenned affect. I'd love to get off it, but unfortunately it's one of the better drugs for me.

I took Risperdal 2mg for a little while to "knock me down" from hypomania and get me some sleep. I didn't have a good experience on it. I felt flat and I was very difficult to function at work (I'm a nurse and couldn't afford the extra time to think). I started having mild hallucinations( i knew what I was seeing wasn't real) /depersonalization, and paranoid episodes so it wasn't a good fit for me. I ended up hospitalized two months after starting it so I might have just been heading in that direction anyways. Risperdal's sister drug is Invega and I took that a few years ago and it worked really well although lactation can happen with both of those drugs.

I have just started Risperdal 3 days ago ,im also tapering off Seroquel ... Had to come off the Seroquel due to weight gain and metabolic syndrome ..
For me I have noticed a DECREASE in hunger .. I no longer want to eat everything that doesnt move anymore.
Side effects for me are i am a little more thirsty but I drink water all the time. As far as feeling an effect on my BiPolar Im not feeling too swift .. Im not sleeping very well .. it certainly doesnt help me with sleep like Seroquel did . Im willing to give Risperdal a chance as its ALOT cheaper than Seroquel XR .

Everyone is differant and respond to medications differantly .. I have finally come to terms with the fact that pretty much any meds are going to have side effects ... its just a question of when the pros are better than the cons . Hopefully we can all find a happy medium where meds work but we can tolerate the sie effects .

Good luck and keep us informed on your progress

I was on low doses of Risperdal for a little over 2 months. I keep a journal to help me track what new happens when I change meds. Last week I started having trouble swallowing, had sever muscle stiffness, and tremors so that I couldn't hold a pen to write. I experienced moderate to severe headaches daily. The worst effect was confusion. In a short period of time I would have to write everything down, lost my sense of direction, screwed up my banking system, and had trouble remembering what day of the week it was. I would have to refer to a calendar repeatedly to stay on the correct day.
