Hi,
I am new here and have a question to ask. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. I have had two instances where people told me exactly what they thought of me, then the next day or month, blamed it on the alcohol or medication they were on. I have asked my counselor about this and she tells me that it doesnt necessarily mean that they were telling me what they really felt. I am am a believer that you say what you mean when you are drunk, what you would like to say when you are sober. What are your feelings on this? My counselor has no experience in alcohol or medication abuse, so I tend to not really believe what she is telling me. Any info would be helpful. SG |

I agree, those things that you say when you're drunk don't just come out of nowhere. There seems to be some kind of basis for them in your beliefs about people, your attitudes, your desires -- I think it's somewhat comparable to your responses to things in dreams. Though that gets into the issue of whether or not the "unconscious" mind is real....
Then again, since inhibitions are reduced, emotions tend to be exaggerated. So if someone keeps telling you how much they love you, that you're their BEST friend, etc it probably just means that they don't hate you. Maybe if you took what someone said and reduced the intensity of it you could get what they really think. Does this sound right? I'll have to pay more attention to friends this weekend. |

I have to agree with YOU - that a lot of people can only say what they truly are feeling inside when they are under the influence of a foreign substance (drugs or alcohol) - when their fears are not inhibited by the thought of rejection...

That's one reason I don't like to drink to excess any more (which is about 3-4 mild drinks for me, easy drunk). I realllly mouth off and then feel like a complete *** the next second, once it's too late to take it back.
