Hello. I am a 35 year old man who has suffered from depression and anxiety most my life and it seems to be getting worse the older I get. I have yet to find any lasting solutions to this problem. I have recently started seeing a therapist who recommends I start taking Lamictal although I am reluctant to do so because I’ve already taken so many other medications without much success. I was wondering if I could get some real life feedback about this drug before I start taking it. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Hi, Derek - first of all, welcome to PsychCentral. I hope you find it as helpful and comforting as I do. I have been taking Lamictal for almost 5 years now, at varying dosages. It is typically used to treat bipolar disorder, which I have. It is considered a mood stabilizer that works more on depression than mania and is also given to patients with treatment resistant depression.
Lamictal is a fairly benign drug, but it must be titrated up slowly from a low dose to a therapeutic dose to avoid a serious rash that can occur. I did not have any problems with that, and the only side effect I've noticed with it is some issues with memory. Many people seem to find memory and concentration are issues when taking Lamictal in higher doses. I'm working with my pdoc to lower my dose to see if the memory issues improve. Other than that, it works well for me in keeping my mood stable. My I ask what meds you have tried so far?
