hi. i don't know much about it. I think that its high dose wellbutrin plus some naltrexone. in studies, people who stayed on treatment along with standard treatment for obesity lost more weight than those on placebo. unlike many (most?) prescriptions approved for obesity, contrave is not a controlled substance.
the only downside is that you're throwing a high dose, stimulating antidepressant plus however much of an opiate antagonist into your pre-existing cocktail. i have no idea if that will be a good thing, a bad thing, or if its basically a non-issue. wellbutrin has become fairly standard for depression, especially for people w/ low energy, apathy, fatigue, concentration difficulties, etc. for whatever reason, it seems to be more popular w/ people labeled w/ various forms of bipolar. i do hope it helps. my only advice would be to go to some online drug-drug interactions checkers and see what (if anything...) pops up. that's one thing I do -not- like about "poly-pharmacy," especially in psychiatry. Many psychiatrists seem eager to prescribe more and more drugs--especially new, on patent drugs--but they don't seem to do any research into potential interactions, possible long term ill effects, etc. again, i hope it helps. have you ever been prescribed stimulants? they're not for everyone, but my wild guess is that many stimulants might help, too, and many of those are available in generic form, plus...just in my very, very limited experience, its easier to adjust the simulant dosage, taper, discontinue completely, etc., than it is to add, adjust, stop many other classes of psych drugs. good luck! |

I wouldn't put my hopes on Contrave. For me Wellbutrin reduced my appetite for a relatively short period of time only. And the way that naltrexone works is as an opioid antagonist, meaning it is supposed to reduce your cravings by essentially nullifying the high you get from taking them. It seems to me that the way that could work is that you train yourself to remember it's pointless to take opioids because you won't get enjoyment from them. I don't see how applicable that is to food. You're going to be eating whether you want to or not. And food is still going to taste good even if you don't crave it.
