started on 20mg of Prozac last Friday and I'm feeling a lot more anxious. I know it's still early. my pnurse claimed the Prozac would help with the anxiety--does anyone find this to be true? will the anxiety subside?

It can increase anxiety, heck it can make you want to die or even get so manic you're psychotic but, that's rare. Can I say you'll be fine? Can your nurse? Nope. Time will tell. That's any medication, even non-psych meds so, wait it out a few weeks, maybe a month. If it is getting to be too much, you might need something else. Be honest with yourself and tolerate it. Side effects generally subside.
Thanks for this!

I'm assuming you're taking it for clinical depression. I tried it once... felt very edgy at first. It got better. In fact the edginess was beneficial. In a short time the edginess subsided and the med worked great. As the previous poster said... nobody can tell how you will react.

SSRIs can have an activating effect at first that makes some people feel more anxious. This effect usually goes away after a little while. If it is bothering you too much, or doesn't go away you should talk to your pdoc about it. But it is not unusual to have this happen. Good luck.

thank you everyone! I'm feeling a little more optimistic that the anxiety will fade... I had such a huge panic attack on Tuesday that I couldn't even go to work. ah, the fun of psych meds.

I actually did not have good luck with Prozac and anxiety. I had to keep upping the dosage to help with the depression, but still had to take something for anxiety (Xanax). I recently stopped taking Prozac because it no longer works for depression, and now I take Cymbalta. Within a few days of stopping the Prozac, I noticed a difference - much less anxiety and can now rely upon a much lower dose of Xanax. I never knew that the Prozac was making my anxiety somewhat worse. Good luck!
