It was a real awakening of how much people without insurance are actually funding the pharmaceutical companies. I am on 200ug/hr of Fentynal which is 2 100ug/hr patches every 3 days.....20 patches /month.

When I was paying cash for it, I was paying $900/month for them. I finally was able to find an insurance company that would cover that medication (Medicare part D didn't cover that medication at all). When I went to the same drugstore with the insurance, I ended up paying my $5.00 payment.....I needed to know how much the insurance was billed for it because I have to pay the full amount when both payments total $2100. I found out that the insurance only payed the pharmacy just over $500 for that medication.

Wow, with insurance, the medication was only just over $500 & when I was paying cash, it was $900/month......same exact generic medication.

Wonder if all that extra money I was paying went to the pharmacy??????

Just wondering where all my money went?
Debbie

All I can think of is that the out-of-pocket people are paying the actual cost, and the pharmaceutical company is eating the difference between the actual cost and what insurance covers. Costs of medication in the US (cash vs insurance)

It's the same way when you visit a doctor. When I didn't have insurance and paid cash I paid $75 for a visit. With insurance I pay $15 for a visit now. Then some of my doctors charge the insurance for over $300 for a visit. But the insurance companies will only pay them sometimes $30 or $40 for the visit. Is crazy. It's all a big game. I know someone related to hubby who works for an insurance company. They get taken a couple times a year on these hugh all expensives paid vacations for weeks at a time. That's where all our money is going. Wining and dinning a select few.
