I'm sorry, Rose. The only thing I vaguely know about Elavil is that is one of the original and older AD's. I knew one person on it about 20 years ago, but she was more of an acquaintance so never heard anymore about it.

Is there anything in particular you wanted to know?
The pain relief characteristic is very well-established, but just how that works is not. Most people take it in the p.m., as it also helps with sleep. It can cause dry mouth and constipation, but those effects usually fade as your body adjusts to it. Lar |

I take 10 mgs at night and 10 in the am to help with migraines from by head trauma. The results have been amazing. I also no longer suffer from night terrors as a result. It's like magic!

Hi RedRose,
I took amitryptiline awhile back; that is generic Tofranil which is related to Elavil. I took it for sleep and pain. It helped. I was also taking and am still taking Paxil and clonazepam for my depression and anxiety. Hope this helps. Hi Red Rose,
I took Elavil for 8 years at 50mg/day for depression and anxiety together with medazepam. I worked great for me but the withdrawal was hell. I was feeling bit groggy in the mornings but solved it with cooffee. The problems I was left with (after 2 years off it) are low blood pressure and high pulse. hope it helps zena |

I just started, with one 10mg 3 hours before I should go to bed. One didnt work, two didnt work, 3 and 4 didnt work, and now I'm on 5 x 10mg, and all it does to me is making me really tired in the morning, so I'm almost sleepwalking trough most of the day.. I take it because of cronic migraine. It's supposed to make me sleep better/more, make me eat more, and give me less migraine. Well, I dont sleep more, I don't get to bed earlier, even though I take them when I should. When I wake up it feels like I've been runing or something all night.. And I don't dream, it's only black. And I dont eat more.. It makes my concentration a lot worse, and I "dream" crazy things when I'm awake. And it doesn't make my migraine any better either. My doc said that some people have to take 22 x 10mg everyday, and oh my, I hope it works before I come that far.
So, it has only maked things worse than they were.. Anyone like me? |

I took the max dose of Elavil for sleep. Unfortunately, it pushed me into hypomania. This is important to mention as I wonder if that is what is happening to you. In addition, Elavil is a tri-cyclic antidepressant. It is considered a weight gainer as most tri-cyclics are.
Good Luck to you. By the way, 220mg of Elavil is a HUGE dose. I think that the max. dose in the USA is 150mg. I am sure that psychiatrists prescribes meds differently in Norway. Peacemaker |

Hi Red Rose. I'm taking it, the generic. I'm on 100mg a day. And just started yesterday with weaning myself off of it. I've been on it a little over a month and each day since, i have felt worse. I gained 21 lbs in 4weeks, constipation is awful and my stomach/abdomen is so bloated and swollen. When i eat, my stomach feels so much worse.
My pdoc wont listen to me about the side effects i'm having. Thats why i'm taking it upon myself to wean off. I'm not taking it for pain, only for depression. It helps off and on for the depression. But when its off, i'm having suicidal thoughts. I hope this med works out great for you. __________________ So often we dwell on the things that seem impossible rather than on the things that are possible. I hope it works out for you! I dobt know too much about it since I only took it for a little while.. Best wishes for you!
