Hi all,

I am dealing with symtpoms of impulse control similar to that of Trichotillomania or skin-picking.

Are there medications that alongside therapy, assist in treating this?

I am already on the max. dosage of Zoloft (200 mg), 75 mg Effexor and 0.5 mg Fluanxol.
The antidepressants may help? Fluanxol could maybe be increased to 1 mg if it has the potential to help.
Would a mood stabilizer (Lamictal) possibly assist?

I take Zyprexa 5 mg, but that is already sedating and so is the Seroquel which i am currently not taking because Zyprexa is both helping sleep and controlling mania.

Other than what I am currently on, what else would help?

I wish I could help. I have the same problem with skin picking and anger impulse control. I've been increasing Lamictal, so I hope that creates more stability so the impulse control is less intrusive.

Some Dr's are experimenting with really off-label uses for Revia (Naltrexone). It was originally developed as an opiate antagonist to help people get off opiates, but it was found to be more effective in decreasing cravings for alcohol in alcoholics so that's what it's mainly prescribed for. But some Dr's are using it for the more impulse control spectrum of addictions such as gambling and shopping. I've also heard of Dr's prescribing it for self-injury, but haven't heard any results about efficacy.

My trichotillomania stopped suddenly when I started taking Methylsulfonylmethane in addition to NAC and Inositol. I also take Vitamin C as NAC can cause kidney stones if you do not add Vitamin.
For skin picking I would recommend gel nails. The nails are so blunt that skin picking becomes impossible.

My son takes prozac for skin picking but it doesn't seem to help.
