My doctor thinks its best for me to go on an anti depressant to help me through , (I am recovering from an eating disorder, have chronic pain/back issues, ocd /adhd..) and ive been a bit weary. He said for me I could benefit from Cymbalta or Prozac. BUT, now I just read that anti depressants can lower sex drive. I don't want that. It said a sex drive killer can be depression but some medications for depression can kill sex drive.. I don't want that. Sex is a part of a balanced happy/healthy lifestyle I think for me, so now Im really ambivalent towards the meds...

Any words/thoughts/experiences/answers...?

My meds were a sex drive killer. Before my meds I was almost hyper sexual after I took them I just had no drive at all. It went away and I have a normal drive but my antidepressants def killed my sex drive for like 2 months I had no interest.

Cymbalta will help with the chronic pain. I took it for years for chronic pain which finally went away. I didn't notice any effect on my sex drive while taking Cymbalta. I didn't notice much relief from depression or any side effects either. It did help with pain, though.

I had sex drive issues on Zoloft so my doctor switched me to Viibryd. No issues with Viibryd. He said they're all different and it's a matter of trying them out to see what works for each individual.

Antidepressants certainly cause sex drive issues. Not for everyone, but I'm one of those people that tends to get most common side effects of medications. Surprisingly I'm on Prozac currently @ 20mg, have been for around 9 months. At first it did lower it, and without it being TMI it does take longer to achieve the err 'end result'

Cymbalta was no good for me, I tried it after being on Effexor and having too many side effects. I also have chronic back pain, the Prozac doesn't do anything for that. You might be lucky on Cymbalta though.

I'd say the worst ones sex drive for me would have to be Lexapro and most SSRI's. For some reason the SNRI's were less of a side effect for me, but it depends in each individual.

Have you tried other meds in the past? I'm terrified of the 'weigh gainers' due to my ED too, so I can relate to being scared of new meds.
Thanks for this!

I have been on these sswhatevers for about 18 years. Only until now has it occured to me that all of the problems I have had are be caus of them. they are no better then placebo. The thing is that these meds cause anxiety do to the sex problems. Simply because having natural sexual ability relaxes a person. My doctor agreed. On top of this the meds not only affect mood but your behavior as well. How many times doo you see contact youe doctor right away if you experience this and that. your doctor does not likely care and your doctor is up to his eyeballs. so much for doctor or Big pharma taking any gdamned agitated responsibility for its junk in your syztem. they do not care.its up to us. finally the most dangerous thing you can do is get hyped up on cymbalta because it is more of a surgical procedure that once you pull the plug. the noose starts asking to play hangman. the car wants to see 100kmh feels like head on into a wall. try sound therapy. be selective but dont go for sswhatever. dicontinuation is hell for a rreason and likely causes long term damage.

I've tried 5 different meds, including the two you mention and none of them affected my sex drive. I had insomnia issues with both of them, but my sex drive was as high as ever (which is pretty high)

You should not consider messing about with your biochemistry. the revolving door syndrome adds very little in improvement or value to these drugs. Besides marketing. They are not innovative in any way. Just remember that as the emotionless "it" you could become, Your behavior will change with it. Even in ways you won't notice. When its all over after it has really screwed you up. You might ask the question. Was that me or did the drug do it. They want you hooked then having a discontinuation syndrome which just means oh your crazy. lets increase the dose then or add something else.

I was on paxil for 4 months. My sex drive was the same, I could achieve erection, I just couldn't orgasm, just a constant erection that stayed as long as I was doing the act(2 hours one time). Eventually I lost intrest in sex.

Paxil also made me eat less.

They kill all feeling over time. Including sex drive. The reason being they very unnaturally hold adrenaline in the synapse. just like many illegal street drugs you will build up a tolerance and the brain will atrophy. Of course they won't market that, you have to see if for yourself. Happy with your medication are you, we'll see you again in the paranoia section at a later time then.
