So about 6 weeks ago my pdoc added Lamictal to my med regimine. He started me on 25mg 1x a day for 14 days, then increased it to 25mg 2x a day for 4 weeks. I saw him today for my "check-in". I thought I was doing well. Thus, I thought he would keep everything the same. However, he decided to increase my Lamictal. He increased it to 50mg 2x a day for 2 weeks, then said to increase it again to 100mg 2x a day for 4-6 weeks until I come back to see him for my next check-in.
I know 25mg 2x a day was probably small, and I am okay with increasing to 50mg 2x a day. But 100mg 2x a day seems like a lot. Is it? I questioned increasing it when I seemed to be responding to the lower dose and pdoc said something along the lines of the dose I was on was just a "starter" dose to make sure I didn't have any reactions to it. He said for it to be effective, we need to increase it to a therapuetic level. Does anyone know how high is too high with Lamictal? |

I was on 375mg to get a therapeutic effect. 200mg is kind of the lower end of therapeutic dose for many patients.

The therapeutic dose is like 250-350 mg but my Doc told me that the dose can be taken higher as long as the plasma level is OK or something like that. I've been on all sorts of doses since 2003 and have not responded to any of them. I was on 500 mg for at least 6 mths and he got me up to 600 mg and I had side effects and went cross-eyed! So he backed it down. I don't think Docs take it higher than 400 mg or so. (Look it up on the web and you will find the normal dosage.)

I think I was at 200 at my max dose. Maybe 250 but probably 200.
