Due to lack of insurance and a crazy series if events I've still not gotten in with a psych since my BP1 dx thus February. Last night I was Rx'd Haldol (because it's inexpensive and I've failed on like 5 other meds so far with adverse reactions). Anyone have any thoughts on Topamax (on it for 9 days now and up to 50mg now) and Haldol (just Rx'd 2mg @bed and will start tonight)?

If you've not seen a psychiatrist, who is prescribing these medications?

I was on Topamax / "Stupamax" for 3 months. It initially worked, but totally pooped out 3 weeks ago. Now on Lamictal. Anyways, Topamax is known to cause problems with "trying to find the word" and "forgetfullness" I had both of these side effects and I usually don't get side effects from meds.
Topamax is also known to give kidney stones. I liked it initially because it curbed my appetite and made everything carbonated taste like poo. But after 3 months everything abruptly stopped and sent me into a world of hellish mood swings. Topamax works great for some people. I started at 50mg twice per day then got it upped to 100mg twice per day.

Wish you the best on it.

I had a 3 month Rx upon discharge in Feb. Saw a "transitional pdoc" at a clinic mid-May waiting for my July 2nd appointment with a pdoc. The pdoc quit and I was informed the day before my appointment. So then I found another pdoc, saw him once for an initial consult ($250 for 20 minutes), switched meds, had an allergic reaction, his nurse took me off the one offending med via phone, he left the country for 3weeks so I went to a walk-in clinic and got the Topamax...had an appointment Tuesday with a psych whose office who called 2hours before my appointment and said they refused to see me. After going from August 5-20th unmedicated for Bipolar I went to an ER at a hospital way across town and the ER doc Rx'd the Haldol. Supposed to see a new psych yet again on the 29th, we shall see.

So far it's been okay. I was terrified of Haldol, I am afraid of everything I think after having been on 1,000mg Seroquel. Thankfully Haldol is NOTHING like that.

I've been taking the klonopin with the haldol at night cause I have trouble getting to sleep. But now I dont have anything PRN so idk if I should ask the new pdoc to double my klonopin, maybe write a second Rx for 2mg at bed so I can have my 1mg around 4 or 5pm like I usually do everyday when I start to lose it or what.

thought it would be beneficial for the crazy/disturbing thoughts I was having, and the paranoia. It says it can help with those in 1-2wks, full effects in 4-6wks. I stopped taking klonopin PRN and taking it at bed with the Haldol because I am still having insomnia but it makes no difference. I didn't take klonopin at all yesterday. I finally (barring any unforseen complications, which believe, Ive had a wild ride of it and hard time finding a doctor!!) this Thursday so I am very interested to see what a pdoc has to say. Maybe they will increase the Haldol. I don't want a newer med. They cost hundreds of dollars a month and we can't afford health insurance for me right now. Plus, I feel better with a med that's been tried and true and around a while. I'd be willing to try Lithium again (I wasn't drinking a lot or enough actually) water when they first tried me on it inpatient BC I had an abscess in my mouth and everything tasted gross, so I wasn't excreting enough of it or whatever, there wasn't a *true* adverse reaction ya know? But I REALLY dont want to be on a med that causes weight gain either!!

Haldol and Topamax was a good mix for me after trying to find the right meds for 2 1/2 years, this combo was finally the one that got me stabilized. I did get tartive dyskensia after 6 months on the Haldol but they gave me artane to counteract that. good luck.
