So my doctor started me on Vyvanse and when I took it nothing seemed to be different other than the fact that I couldn't sleep. (Yay) and so I told her and she told me I had to bring in the Vyvanse to get a new script (ok fine). I heard her tell her assistant they were going to try me on something short acting as opposed to something long acting. (Ok sounds good) so it took me 3 different trips to my doctors office to finally get a new script and so when I get there and leave with my new script I noticed it was another long acting medication (adderall XR), no biggie though I will give it a try. So I took it 3 days in a row and I didn't notice any difference (again) except maybe that I seemed a little more focused at night, but not much and not at all during the day. (Boo, but at least I can sleep with this). So I have this option to send a message to my doctor and I tell her that it doesn't seem to be working and she replies telling me that I need to give it more time (not really sure why) and that because it is long acting I won't have ups and downs and blah blah. So now she wants me to wait through next week taking a med that doesn't seem to do anything and then what? Go through the hassle of trying to get a new script again!!? Sorry I am just frustrated

You do indeed need to give it more time, like maybe a whole month. Three days is nothing.

Oh. I thought that because it works right away that I would notice something. I will try to be more patient, lol.

The stimulants act immediately within the first hour of taking them...

It's the non stimulants that can take weeks.

I've had good results with focalin, concerta, and strattera (a non stimulant)

I've been on both Adderall XR and IR, and I have to say that the XR are a lot smoother, but, unfortunately, more expensive.

While I was in the military, I was strictly on Adderall XR. After I got out, my VA doctor wouldn't re-prescribe the adderall and instead started me on anti-depressants.

For over a year now, I have been taking various types of antidepressants. At first, it made no sense to me. Why am I being treated with SSRI's for ADHD. I did some research and found that a LOT of people are taking antidepressants along with their stimulant such as adderall or vyvance (spell check). However, I haven't been able to find any cases where people are being successfully treated with just SSRI's.

Adderall XR worked amazing for me, every aspect of my life was improved. From my ability to focus, attention to detail, my sleep was vastly improved (I used to not be able to sleep because I couldnt keep my brain from wandering over 1000 different thoughts, but never completing one.) I was on it for three years upon my diagnosis of ADHD.

These antidepressants my doc has been prescribing me have absolutely no effect on my ability to focus or sleep for that matter. I usually only get negative side effects. Many cases, thoughts of self harm such as cutting my wrists. Not really thoughts, but urges. I 'wanted' to cut myself.

I have lost several jobs because of my lack of attention to detail, and the antidepressants aren't working. I have continually tried to convince my doctor that the SSRI's are having no effect and even after a year, she refuses to try any form of stimulant, saying that "we just need to find the right antidepressant". I'm not depressed! The antidepressants make me depressed.

Again, I am asking to see if anyone has had any success with taking strictly SSRI's to successfully treat their ADD/ADHD. That and if anyone has any advice on a way to convince my doc that antidepressants aren't working and probably wont, to put me back on the medication I took in the military for 3 years which had amazing, life changing results, it would be much appreciated.

^above, I would suggest getting a new doctor really. It seems like yours doesn't really know what shes doing. If the adderall worked great for you, tell that to your new doctor. Antidepressants such as SNRI's and wellbutrin only work for like 5 out of 10 people while stimulants help 9 out of 10 people.
