I got prescribed klonopin the other day.

The bottle/dr says take daily 1mg.

I only take it on days I need it(leaving the house, like once or twice a week).

Will taking it as needed prevent me from building up a tolerance to the drug?

Not sure about that. Are you concerned about building up a tolerance? I've been taking Klonopin for years now. It is has a very long half life so stays in your body much longer than other benzos. I use Ativan which has similar chemical properties on an as needed basis, but it is more fast acting and designed for that and comes in lower doses. I don't know how using K would work that way.

yeah, If I take it like twice a week would I still be at risk for building up a tolerance?

You will gain nothing if using it just for leaving the house , that's tolerance in its self, ATIVAN would get you in a relax mood quicker and its half has strong , but using has therapy to venture out may backfire.

Ativan is I think only a fourth of clonazepam and doesn't stay in your body though it is nearly the same molecular composition. If you need something "as needed" it makes more sense to use a faster acting agent. I use the clonazepam regularly 2x a day. That keeps my anxiety in check nearly all the time at a constant level and I've never had to up the dose. Sometimes I even take less with no effects whatsoever. It is supposed to work long and slow as I understand it.

Perhaps I'm not understanding your concern for "tolerance"? Like lots of meds if you take it regularly you can't just go off of it in a snap, but as far as it affecting you I don't really get it yet. When I have had knee surgery I took the meds because of pain. They worked just fine and I never felt a need for more. And when the pain subsided I slowly got off of them in a safe way. Taking pain killers just here and there with knee replacement would have been less effective. I had to have it in my system because that is way it is designed to work.

Well here's the deal. Klons last longer and stay in your system longer then say xanax or ativan. That makes building up a tolerance longer. As long as you take as prescribed you should be ok! I prefer klons for that reason! I'm on xanax right now and am concerned because it wears off way to fast! So building up a tolerance is quicker, same with ativan too. Only Valium and Klonopin IMHO is safer for building up a tolerance. Of course all bets are off you if abuse any benzo! I am currently popping xanax like aspirins and that should not be the case! I am desperately trying to get back on klonopin.

But seriously, just don't abuse them and you should be ok! Honest! Being on Klons or Valium is IMHO safer then Xanax or Ativan. That does not mean they are bad for you, but you should be even more careful with them. Just be honest with your pdoc! Good luck.
