Hi all, I was just wondering if anyone has had any combination with antidepressants (effexor) antipsychotics (risperdal) and any type of diet pill out there including ones that give u more energy and suppresses your appetite. I'm putting on weight since I started taking my medication and Im NOT happy with it. I used to be able to not eat for a few days I just simply cant seem to do that anymore. Or maybe anybody knows if any combinations could be safe? Any info at all would be appreciated.

I can't answer your question but there is evidence that people with mh issues also have issues in the gut. It's a big complicated topic obviously but I do know 99% of seratonin is stored there and antidepressants affect seratonin. The easiest areas to consider is candidiasis and sugar. Well sugar isn't that easy to fix

Can you changed your meds? If the weight gain is making you unhappy to the point of doing stupid things (diet pills are kinda stupid and bad for your body), then it's obviously not making you happy/stable/sane and maybe you could benefit some other option.

My psychisatrist prescribed me Metformin, a medication for diabetics, when I was having this problem a few years ago. Some psychiatrists use it off label for patients with significant weight gain, especially when caused by antipsychotics (like Risperdal). Its use is based on the idea that antipsychotics mess with your blood sugar, which is the reason patients are so hungry and cravinf sweets/ carbs. This med helps with cravings by stabelizing your blood sugar. If you google "Metformin antidepressant weight" or something like that, you will find research articles.
It supposedly works quite well, but you need to follow a diabetic type diet (low carb, basically) for it to really work- otherwise it can have the opposite effect and make you really hungry. My pdoc didn't know this part. I told him he should tell his other patients this when he prescribes it because otherwise it won't work. So it's not a quick fix but might be worth a conversation if the weight gain gets out of hand. |

Thanks for all your replies you've all been really informative. I'm gonna discuss my options with my pdoc at the end of this month when I see her. The diabetic med was quite interesting, I'm gonna look into that. I also already drink a lot of green tea it used to help when I wasn't on medication but it doesn't help anymore... I dont eat a lot of carbs in general I hardly ever eat pasta or ricebut what I've noticed is that I'm picking all the time lol

Like you i've almost been at my ideal weight and had it thrown off by meds. For me it was Parnate. I gained 30 lbs on it. I was able to lose it after coming off and still taking meds, so its possible. Your regimine just needs to be tweaked by your doctor to find the right plan for you. I like green tea too.
