Just wondering if anyone knows anything about this medication?

I was prescribed it today (75mg/day) by my doctor for depression, insomnia and anxiety, I'm a bit worried though as my old doctor who had me on Fluoxetine said the older Tri-Cyclic antidepressants are not good and should be avoided.

I'm also concerned about the side effect list with regards to weight gain, I really DON'T want to put on any weight.

Also, Alcohol? I'm not a big drinker at all but I like to be able to go out and have a few drinks if I want to. The instructions say alcohol should be avoided but not that you absolutely can't drink at all

Another thing is its supposed to make you drowsy right? This is good in a way as I have sleeping problems but I also have to get up at 6am and I need to be able to do this and I'm worried that I'll be too zonked to get up

Does anyone have any experience of this medication they could share with me?

Tricyclics don't have to be avoided. They are usually as effective as more modern anti-depressants, but sometimes they have more side effects. I've used a tricyclic in the past and it was great for me. The only side effect was dry mouth. It's worth a try, IMO. Good luck!!

Prothiaden really helped me in the past ... also good with sleep!

Your not suicidal though ... are you?

Prothiaden is not a very safe medication ... (compared to the newer generation of anti-depressants) ... if you are suicidal and might be tempted to OD.

No, I'm not suicidal...my doctor really grilled me to make sure of that before she prescribed them to me

They do seem to be good for sleep, I don't feel any better in myself yet but I went to sleep at 9pm last night and didn't wake up til 1pm today which is amazing for me cause I usually only sleep for about 4 or 5 hours a night

She said the anti-depressant effect takes longer to happen than the sleep improvement effect so hopefully that will come soon

I'm glad they worked for you, hopefully they will for me too!

Also ... if you respond to this medication like I did, the drowsiness effect of the medication wears off once you get used to your dose.

But if the medication works the way it should, then your sleeping schedule should markedly improve as your depression lifts ... and that means that you wont be as reliant on the meds to make you drowsy anymore.

Good luck with it Prothiaden?
