Has anyone used 5-HTP for depression and or anxiety? And if so what have your experiences been. I have read things where people swear by it, others that warn to never use it.

I have been on Prozac 10mg/day for years, but want off. This is the lowest dose of Prozac also. Anyone had a similar experience, quitting their SSRI and taking 5-HTP? And if so what were the effects?

Thanks in advance

I've taken it before, not completely alone. I took it along with my snri and didn't have a problem with it. I haven't taken it in a while, but I would take it at night because it made me a little sleepy. Good luck.

I started taking 5HTP while tapering an antidepressant. I found that it did help my mood.

I've never tried it but I wish I had heard about this a few months ago. I went off my SSRI around 2 months ago but ended up having bad depression around day 21 and had to go back on it.

My attempt included the following supplements (which I think helped a bit): Vitamin B12, Vitamin B6, Magnesium, MultiVitamin, Fish Oil. I still take the supplements even though I'm back on my SSRI.

I want off the medicine, maybe when I try again I'll use 5HTP.

not really any good for depression , not suppose to take it the same time has real AD,S , when you have come of say an ssri and waiting to go on another type of AD some take it then till they start new med. But has an antidepressant on its own , its no where near strong enough for true depression .

Did you stop the ssri without a slow taper? You may have had rebound depression as a result of stopping. It usually takes some time for your mind to stabilize without the medication once you stop it.

I did slowly taper but perhaps not slow enough, I followed the doctors orders and tapered over 1.5 months. I figured there would be rough patches but they got so bad that I couldn't work so I couldn't continue like that. Maybe I'll try again when I can take more time off work to allow my mind to work through it.
