Hello,

I am new here but not new to depression. I have tried so many meds and could not take them. Had a lot of bad side effects. I can take very few meds.

I have read this is some sort of cousin to prozac? I had a really bad issue with prozac. I ended up on the cardiac floor of a hospital for about a week about 7 years ago. My heart was beating too fast. Scary! But my heart was ok after that.

So I am kind of scared to try anything new.
But I have tried other meds over the years.About all the new ones, but if I have any kind of heart issue or anything start I stop it right away.

I go back to my doc next month and wanted to ask him about this new med. Has anyone tried it? I am not even sure if I can try it, or if my shrink will have it now or if my insurance will cover it?

The only thing that truly worked for me for depression years ago was something called the emsam patch. Think I got that right. But I became very allergic to the patch and had to stop it.

I wish this depression would just leave me. I will update my profile soon. Nice to meet you! If this med does not help me or I can't take it or get it, maybe someone else can? Best of luck to everyone.

Lynn

It is brand new. It is an SSRI but acts on a wider range of receptors. I am supposed to switch to another new one called viibryl.

I have never heard of it. Personally, I am prone to side effects so I do not like to try new drugs unless they have been out for awhile. That's just me though. It may be great for you. Although with a new drug I am sure the costs will be significant since there will not be a generic.

I just changed to it from the worst AD, Fetzima. Brintellex is supposedly very potent and effect since it hits a lot more of the serotonin receptors and concentrates on the calming, feel good serotonin ones. Hope it works well for you!

Thank you everyone that posted! I sure appreciate it. New and still learning my way around here. I go back to the doctor later in April unless I can get back in sooner. I am almost afraid to get my hopes up as I have done that so many times over the years! But I still have hope and faith.

Good luck Jordan23. Please let me know how you do on it.
Good luck to everyone. I wish everyone the best! Life can sure be hard on us I know.

Take care.
Lynn
P.S. I keep trying to smile, but I cry a lot too. I just don't let anyone see me cry! Life is hard.

Never heard of it either but if it's calming I would definitely try it but since it's a cousin to Prozac I dunno. It also made me have severe heart problems such as ventricular fibrillations and fast heart rate.

GROOOOOSSS This antidepressant it terrible. There's trials that say placebo is better and the side effects it has.. Including increased chance of colon cancer!

Vortioxetine - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

But there's another cousin of this molecule that's under development. "Tedatioxetine". It's a SNDRI.

I agree. I read it was a cousin to prozac. Maybe I read wrong, but probably not. I kind of doubt my shrink would try me on it, even if I could? I don't know though.

I have had doctors give me stuff that the pharmacist said do not take, could cause adverse reactions if taken together-that kind of thing. So I am getting so I don't always trust doctors. You have to be your advocate. Which can be hard if you are depressed or sick.

One thing my husband goes in with me to my shrink appointments. That has helped me. Sometimes he can't believe how rude some can be! I go to a place where I usually get the same one, but not always.

That heart thing was a big deal. I mean they wanted to keep me longer than a week. I had to have tons of more tests when I got out of the hospital. It was a scary ordeal! I could post it all, but it would be a long post! And all bc of the prozac! For some it really helps I know. For me, a lot of meds have given me problems. Rashes, allergic reactions, etc.. But the scariest is the heart thing. I was lucky I recovered fairly soon as I did.

So I think I will probably not try it even if my shrink says OK, he has not always been right! I want to live and get better. And that heart issue happened like over 7 years ago. I am 47 now, my heart is fine, my blood pressure is fine, I think I would not want to risk it! My weight has always been good too.

I really need some natural treatments. Problem is I have had some reactions to herbs and stuff too! Can't win sometimes.

Thanks for everyone's input. I do appreciate it. I think I need to make a lot of everyday life changes, I have fallen into bad habits of coping. Like too much tv, etc...I have isolated myself, mostly, except for my husband, and that is not good. Been a long hard cold winter here in WV. Well rambling. Sorry.

One week ago I switched from Lexapro to Brintellix. I had been on Viibryd for 9 months before that. I liked Viibryd, but it caused me too much anxiety, went back to Lexapro (I had been on Lex for 8 years) but Lexapro makes me too sleepy, hence Brintellix. I also take Lamictal for Bipolar II. So far I have noticed slight nausea within an hour after taking it. It is not bad at all though. I also have noticed slight dizziness and foggy brain. Sometimes I have a "hungover" feeling. I am not tired like I was on Lexapro. I am waiting to see how things progress until I make a final judgement.

I'm on Brintellex. 10 days on 10 mgs and currently on my 10th day of 20 mgs. Nausea is not so bad, constipation just started. I haven't read or been told that this is a cousin to Prozac. It's in a new class, not SSRI or MAO, etc.
It's from Europe. Supposedly has great success with MDD.
I don't like it. I'm not sure how long I should be waiting, but by the end of this month I see my PDR and i'm going to ask to switch. It has heightened my anxiety, and gives me malaise. I'm also in DBT therapy so something should be working, but it's not....Cymbalta was no good. Lexapro had always worked well for me and then went generic and doesn't work at all . Anyone have any suggestions? I just wanna be me!!!! thanks.

I'm transitioning over to Brintellix from Wellbutrin right now. My pdoc is impressed with its effects on her other patients that are on it.

My pdoc wants to do this slowly because there is the possibility of serotonin syndrome.

Because it is new there isn't a generic and won't be until the patent ends so some insurance companies may not cover it.

I've contacted my DR. tonight. Brintellix is NOT for me. It's depressing just reading all the success stories from it! I have NO motivation, Don't want to talk, accept calls, don't even want to shop....nada...It's a horrible feeling of depression and melancholy.

I'm on week three of Brintellix and abilify. It's worked wonders. I had been really bad since February and the put me on Fetzima ...I got worse! So the switched me to Brintellix (with Abilify because I was desperate). At first I was nauseous all the time. But I made sure to take it in the morning with breakfast and after a week the nausea subsided. I'm happy with the results. I hope it works for you!

I've stayed on 10mg and I'm doing great. I'm supposed to go up to 20 next week but I've heard from a few that at 20 they were experiencing negative effects so I'm going to ask if I could stay at 10. How did YOU feel on 10 mg?
