So I’m kind of fed up with Seroquel. I haven’t gained weight but that is because I’m on Topamax (another pill). I’m also on Metformin from Seroquel because it caused me to be pre-diabetic. So I’m sure you have read my story a million times. I was on 400 mg of Seroquel before and came off of it last March because of the diabetes. Well I was in the middle of pdoc’s and my old pdoc weaned me off in two weeks, which I would think is very fast since I was on it for several years. Anyways I went into a mixed episode and the new pdoc tried several APs, long story I went back on 400 mg of Seroquel. Well during the four months I was off of it I lost 30 pounds.

I really want to get off of this stuff and he wonders if I even need an AP because I have never experienced psychosis. We think I’m on a high dose because I need to be knocked out to sleep. I suggested Geodon because I’ve done some reading on reviews and it seems that it isn’t as high risk as Seroquel for weight gain? He said the highest dose is 160 mg and that possibly wouldn’t be enough compared to the 400 mg of Seroquel, if I understood him right. He suggested maybe slowly lowering and see what happens because I’m on a different mix of medicines (see below), and if need be maybe having a low dose of Seroquel and some Geodon, or maybe neither. I’m scared about going into a mixed episode and the withdrawals were hell, I thought I was going to die. I think I was weaned off way too quickly before. I decided after my appointment, of course, to lower the dose and see what happens. If it doesn’t work I will go back to 400 mg of Seroquel. I’m going to follow the directions of my pdoc of course and when I left a message I told him I want to go very slowly. I haven’t heard back yet. I just wanted to know of anyone’s experiences of coming off of Seroquel? Is it going to be hell again even if I do it slowly? I don't care if it even takes a few months.

I am sorry you are unhappy with your meds but be careful about making changes without doctors approval. Weaning off meds can take varying lengths of time.
Here is an article or three that talks about getting off seroquel carefully.
