Q. Is there anyone here who successfully came off seroquel and saw their diabetes improve? Also the hunger after taking it?
A. Not sure if this helps, but I was given Seroquel for Insomnia about 5-6 years ago and was on it for about a year. Prior to that I was a pretty healthy weight and in good mental health - maybe some anxiety, and stress issues but nothing too bad - in fact I was in a pretty positive period of my life. Once on the drug my energy level just bottomed out - some days I could barely lift my arm to change a channel on the tv. I went from a healthy 145-150 lbs to a sudden 190 in just a few months - with no major change in eating habits, in fact I swear I was eating less. The worse part was I became a WRECK. I had night terrors. I wouldnt remember the dreams or whatever just wake up with all my apartments lights on (and a few times knocked over) all I would remember is waking up in a dead fear and not being able to even turn the light off - apparently I would just sit there till I passed out. I was convinced that every noise I heard at night was someone breaking in and during the day I swore there was an infestation of spiders in my apartment. What got me was how normal it felt at the time. It wasn't until I realized my clothes didnt fit anymore that I did some online research and saw posts about others with the weight and psych issues. I had my Dr. take me off it right away. That was 3 years ago. My weight has slowly crept up (even though I cut back on food and started power walking), Ive had fatigue and increases in anxiety and just this morning I was told I have type 2 diabetes. More research saw links to the Serequel and the Statin drug that I was put on after 3 years of spiky Triglycerides. I seriously considered suing the Dr who gave me Serequel. Hope this helps! |

I can't believe they so commonly prescribe it just for sleep even though it works great for that for many people. There are safer options.

Im sorry this is happening to you ... Anti psychotics should really never be first line meds for insomnia ... They are heavy duty drugs , but i see it happening all the time around here . I dont know if persuing a lawsuit with your old Doctor would result in anything.. maybe speak with an attorney and see what they advise.
take care

I don't know many but the friend I have who got diabetes from seroquel didn't even gain weight, he was perfectly healthy and skinny and couple of weeks of seroquel, diabetes. When the doc prescribes, he is well aware of this risk.
