Hi,

I'm just wondering if anyone has ever experienced a dystonic reaction to anti psychotics? I've had this trouble in the past when I've been on other anti-psychotics, but never had it when I've been on quetiapine. Am on very low dose at the moment (200mg) and psych is adamant she wants to increase it, but this past week I have had neck spasms and this last 24 hours my neck has actually locked in a position over to left. It's the worst I've ever experienced. Psych has prescribed procycladine as says it counterbalances the dystonic reaction I am experiencing, but so far it's not worked. I feel like I just want to stop the quetiapine instantly, but CPN is saying not to. The thing is, she doesn't get how bad this side effect is. I've only been able to describe it over the phone and it's gradually getting worse and worse. I'm worried I'm never going to find medications that work for bipolar as I've had this effect now on 6 different anti-psychotics :-(

Has anyone else ever experienced anything like this? If so, what have you done to manage it? This side effect is making me worse than I do in my down patches. I'd rather be down than experience this, and all CPN is saying is that all medications have side effects and I need to be willing to accept that. I can accept most side effects. Weight gain and drowsiness irritate me, but if it means I'm on meds that work I don't care. But this is different. It feels more debilitating than bipolar :-(
Thanks for this!

I haven't experienced that nor have I been on any antipsychitics but if the side effects are worse than the reason you're taking the med then I would say it's not worth taking it. Maybe there is another AP that will work? Or maybe the there is a different type of treatment?

I hope you find a solution!

Thank you. Going to go and visit GP tomorrow as struggling with this side effect. Psych has been great so far, but I think she really wants me on this tablet. Not even sure there are any other AP's that won't have this side effect, as already been on chlorpromazine, aripiprazole, olanzapine, risperidone and now quetiapine, and I've had this reaction to all of them :-( Not due to see psychiatrist now for a few months, so not even sure I can get an answer. It's really scaring me. I've tried really hard to live without meds in the past, and it just hasn't happened. I always end up really low, or really high, but at the same time, I can't cope with this side effect

Does the side effect ever start to go away? Have you been on an AP long enough to know if it's a side effect that might go away?

No, it never goes away, gradually gets worse and worse. Only seems to happen when I've been on them for a period of time.

I need to go back to psych and talk to her, but having trouble reaching her at the moment as have to go through CPN, and CPN not really seeing it as much of an issue. I'm in so much pain thigh as whole shoulder has tensed
