Anyone know of a psychotropic that's not addictive? I know a lot of the SSRIs are hell to get off of. I'm tapering Paxil now and my Pdoc wants to put me on Effexor, but I've read it has awful withdrawal symptoms.
I can't keep going through withdrawal, if the med doesn't work. ![]() Thanks. |

If you're looking for Anti-Depressants, Prozac has a long half life so it's pretty easy to get off of.

Are you looking for antidepressants? I know some are worse than others. I think I was on Effexor and it was hell to come off of.
Then again, there are some medications which are known for causing dependency issues, ie benzodiazepines, yet not everyone develops dependency issues or has problems stopping them. That is, all medications are different, and just because someone else has an issue with them doesn't mean that you will. |

Straterra really had barely any withdrawal symptoms for me except for really bad insomnia.

I have never had any withdrawal symptoms. I have been on and off Effexor a bunch of times and stopped real quick. This could be because I switched to another one right away as I was quitting the old one. Adding the new one might stop withdrawal....i don't know.
I wouldn't call them addictive but if someone gets bad withdrawal it would be dependence. A big difference in my opinion.

Buspar, infamously known to be ineffective and considered basically sugar pill for almost everyone who has tried it. There are a few exceptions.
As far as I am concerned SSRI's are the safest. As Blue_Bird said, prozac has the longest half life of all of them. Also slowly reducing any SSRI coming off of it is important. Effexor can have some bad w.d. symptoms. Yeah addiction and w.d. are not necessarily entwined. The definitions make clear the distinctions.
