So I am prescribed valium as PRN and am finding that I am probably over using it at the moment. I did ask my GP but he did not answer my qst and tell me what my maxium was per day.. at the moment I am finding I am taking 10mg as needed throughout the day and a definate 20mg when I go to bed to help knock me out on top of prescribed night meds to keep me safe...

does that seem like an ok amount? or is it too much?

I know it is not ideal to take it every night to help with sleep but I am really struggling right now and don't know what else to do!!!

At those dosages you risk becoming addicted/dependent on Valium and it will soon stop working for you but along with a return of your symptoms you will have major withdrawals if you don't keep increasing the dose. Everyone is different though but I would be careful if I was you. It also depends on why you take it. Take care

My psych prescribed prn valium for me about two years ago. He told me the way it works best is to use it for a week or two to reset my sleeping pattern then wean off it. I can go a two or three months before I take it again, and then only regularly for a week or two to reset my sleep pattern.

I know ive been warned several times that overuse will lessen its effectiveness and lead to dependacy which then means withdrawal symptoms when you dont take.

I would be asking/talking to my psych/Doctor about your concerns and exploring other safer more long term options for your sleep etc.

HugsPRN usage

Thats the problem I asked my GP but he wouldnt give me an answer so I feel completely alone with this

I am also on phenergan to help sleep but trying to not take as much as I am prescribed as it is making my asthma worse (I am having tests on wed) hence taking extra valium to help me sleep. I was quite tired last night so just took phenergan and my regular epilim and I had broken sleep and did not sleep well at all I dont know what to do!!!

I did not know it could help reset sleeping patterns.. this sounds like something that would definately help me! Can I ask what dosages you took and how you weened off it after the 1-2 week period? Feel free to PM me if you feel more comfortable.

That seems like a high dose to me. If your pdoc doesn't have time for questions, maybe you need to see another.

I was cut off during my post. So I will summarize. 20 mg of diazepam= 1mg clonazepam. All pams are benzos. You need a competent doc. I would pick a pdooc for meds reductions of the class of benzodiazepines. You are good on two fronts. A slow reduction by a doc/pdoc will make it pretty comfortable and diazepam has a really long half life. Meaning it will take longer for it to be excreted from your body unlike alprazolam Xanax) . Which is generally used for acute panic attacks but a half life of around 11.5
I am going to try again to put the chart up:
benzo.org.uk : Benzodiazepine Equivalence Table

Okay, if you look at the half lives. The longer a half life= easier to reduce drug comfortably. Never cold turkey a benzo. please!
Diazepam
(Valium)
20-100 [36-200]= half life and it is higher than 20 unless you have took one
10=mg. So your 20 mg is going to have a longer half life but you will have to reduce slower. Higher the benzo. Slower the reduction.
Compare to Xanax
Alprazolam
(Xanax, Xanor, Tafil)
6-12= half life
0.5= at .5 mg
So it leaves the brain and body much quicker. Leading to possible issues more quickly.
It gives the approximate amounts on the second panel.
Again you need a competent pdoc, just to be safe and it won't take that long. Just try to reduce how often you take it until you see him/her. You don't wan't to ramp it up. I have seen people come off much higher doses and it can literally take close to a year. That is why it is used prn but many people find the relaxation taking more. You just need to nip it in the bud.
Find a good competent doctor and it should go well.
Let me see if I have any other charts:
This ones good-
Tables
and wiki:
Just scroll down for the chart but the text will be helpful-

What about your local pharmacy? Mine has a 24/7 on call, at least it used to. They'll consult and explain, I believe.
Worrying can be such a drag, and not knowing how things interact can risk safety. Really stinks that your physician cannot answer, such a seemingly simple question .
PRN usage especially where you have asthma.
I have read, that efficacy is reduced from this combination. Hence, a higher risk towards dependence on it. If it's just been a couple days, perhaps not much to worry over.

Well, I am taking too much of it all... it is the only way I can cope.. I have chronic pain from being shot a year ago....
So I have Fioricet (which has a barbiturate in it)
I take Klonopin
Perococet and ambien... when I can't sleep or am having a panic attack I take t hem all together..... not good, but that's the best I can do to cope at the moment... I guess I will deal with the withdrawals someday but right not, It helps me get through the day and sleep at night... also take Mini Press at night.

I think sometimes you just have to do the best you can to just get through each day and night whether that be with meds or not. Thinking of you and hope your ok

I was given 10mg 3 x day a few years ago when I was in hospital. Guess all doctors have different opinions on the matter.
