Three years ago I was prescribed low dose Seroquel for chronic insomnia, I'm on 100mg right now at bedtime. I found out today that it actually isn't recommended for treating insomnia (as opposed to sz, bipolar, etc). Some concerns about adverse effects and stuff like that. I do also have problems with depression and it is recommended for that, but it doesn't really help with that to be honest.

Feeling down makes me really disorganized. I ran out of Seroquel a week ago and have been psyching myself up to make the call to book an appointment (I never remember to do it during office hours) but it's been a while now..I'm kinda worried about withdrawal symptoms since I've started to have a few of the more common ones. One upside is that in the past when I've forgotten it for a day, I noticed right away and the insomnia drove me crazy. This time I've actually been sleeping. WD symptoms are mostly headaches, dizziness, etc at this point - and I had that when I was on it anyway.

How serious do you think this could get? I know WD is a serious issue but I haven't had anything bad happen yet. I know I need to call. It's just difficult right now.

I don't agree with using Seroquel for insomnia. Its a heavy duty drug meant for psychosis that happens to have a side effect of making you sleep good. The more serious side effects are why I would not want to take it for that.

I take Remeron. It is an antidepressant that has the side effect of making you sleep good....so same thing but I think is much safer. Trazadone, an older anti depressant is used a lot too. Or an anti histamine like Benadryl. Or even Ambien.

Not sure about the withdrawal from it. Everyone is different. You may or may not get it.

The clinic I go to no longer allows the use of Seroquel for insomnia. They only allow it for psychosis or maybe mania, but not for sleep.

In addition to the recommendation above, I recommend Elavil for sleep, unless you have bipolar. If you have bipolar, and want to take Elavil, you will need a mood stabilizer.

Elavil is an old tried and true medicine which is only needed in low doses for sleep and is so benign, side-effects-wise compared with Seroquel that you should at least try to make a switch.

Funny, I haven't seen those commercials lately which recommend Seroquel for things like getting a hangnail and feeling a little sad. Ok, slight exaggeration, but not by much. That drug is pushed for lots of different psychiatric disorders, but the truth is that its a pretty heavy hitting drug. Its good that you're coming off of it. If the WDs are tolerable at this point, I wouldn't go back on it. If the WDs are horrendous, you may need to start up at a lower dose and taper off.
Thanks for this!

Trazodine is safer and quite effective in low doses for sleep. I
