I've done the advance search on the med and read up a bit, but I'd like to ask if anyone has anything good or bad to add about the med... I just started it yesterday.

I was prescribed Haldol when they thought I schizophrenic nearly 20 years ago. It worked all right and i am NOT trying to scare you, this very very very rare. I woke up blind but a few days after ceaesing it i was ok again.

I had very rigid muscles on it and couldn't sit still. There was a name for that but I can't remember what it was. They gave me cogentin to counteract it but not near enough to work.

WOW - doesn't sound like positive experiences. I have already noticed the jittery-ness. Like a low buzz going through my whole body and I get hyper and can't sit still. It takes longer to calm me down than the Ativan... and then revs me back up :/

That's a really heavy duty antipsychotic. Have you tried any of the newer generation of atypicals? They typically have fewer side effects.

Oh- it's because the newer atypical a actually make me psychotic. Anything that targets serotonin and I do really poorly. The Haldol is at the lowest dose poss (I'm really med sensitive) and seeing if it will help with aggravation that elevates into swapping alters (DID).

I took it years ago , worked well for me, Did need cogentin, But I wasn't about to take one med just to tolerate another
 My Pdoc and I figured out a pill every 3 days worked on my symptoms and I didn't have any side effects. I did stop it after about 6 months as I decided to go med free. Maybe alternate dosing could be an option for you. Good luck . __________________ Helping others gets me out of my own head ~ |

that's really interesting! For now it is a PRN... I've taken it 3 out of 4 days. Haven't hit loopy yet.... forgot to mark what time I took it.

I don't get on the boards as often as I used to, but this doesn't come up real often so I wanted to comment. My pdoc gave me haldol for what he thought was tics/tourettes. The dose was 0.25mg per night (half of the smallest pill) and told me I could start taking a whole pill if I thought it was helping/didn't have any side effects. I never had a consistant effect on my tics/movements. However, I also have issues with anxiety and sometimes when I get anxious, stressed out, late at night, or just because, I start hearing voices/getting paranoid. The few weeks I did regularly take Haldol those didn't happen. My pdoc told me I didn't need/have to take it since it didn't help with the movements, but I still have a bottle and take Haldol prn when I start to get agitated, restless, etc. and it seems to have enough of a calming effect without knocking me out. The first week I started taking it I noticed that it would make me tired and lightheaded, but I don't have that problem anymore.

I notice I've been more depressed.... I wonder if this is related. just in the last few days. Or - lol - it could just be pms. But I don't usually cry for no reason with PMS.

haldol can make u depressed because it decreases dopamine. the feeling of not being able to sit still is called akathisia. i was on haldol for some time and the side effect that i got was having really stiff muscles. hope it works out for you

I took haldol because the pdoc thought it might loosen suicidal ideation as I was very rigid in my suicidalness (possibly because I also have Asperger's?) I took 0.5 mg initially, I don't remember if we upped the dose to 1 mg or we just discussed doing it, and didn't have any side effects. I didn't take it long - maybe six weeks at most - because it didn't work at all. But then again, so far nothing has worked to make me less suicidal so far. (I don't think that sentence flows right but I can't figure out how to make it flow better, sorry.)
By the way - I am very side effect sensitive, so that even I didn't have side effects can only mean good things. |
