This is a "hot topic" with biomedical research scientists.
A key idea is that differences in the kinds of bacteria (the "gut microbiome") which normally live in the gut may be causally linked to depression, anxiety, Autism Spectrum Disorder as well many physical health issues. This is still at the "basic science" stage but with more hard work it might, depending on how the results turn out, lead to improved therapy. This Wiki link and links therein is a reasonable summary of the current position: Microbiome - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

People might be interested in this lady who I just found out died last year. Candace Pert. A pioneer in discovering enkephalins, endorphins, and their receptors. Mapping peptides, mono amines, and their receptors throughout the body. She was a top notch scientist but also saw things in a holistic spiritual sense. I read her book "The Molecules of Emotion" years ago. I believe she said in that book that she found that the highest concentration of neurotransmitter receptors in the body matched the chakras. Big believer in mind body medicine and alternative methods along with being an excellent pharmacologist and neuro scientist. Peptides and their receptors and an AIDS drug being her latest.

A long long time ago evolution chose serotonin to perform lots of different functions in biology. It is found in plants, one celled animals, insects, all animals. As a venom, poison, possibly symbiotic between fruits vegetables and animal digestive tracts. Evolution is known for not reinventing the wheel every time and enhancing existing processes or new ways to use the same chemical.

Thanks for posting your links. I love reading this stuff.
For years, even before I was diagnosed I knew there was more to our gut in relation to our behaviour. I see it with my horses, change the feed, see the crazy come out. I have recently started my horses on a gut balancing mineral supplement, and now they are all so quiet and calm its hard to get them moving! I have now started on the human supplement. |

If you really want to get into the weeds. It appears that communication goes both ways and not just from gut to brain as the article says. Lots of peptides, hormones, and monoamines are involved. Immune response, appetite, feeding habits, stress response, all kind of things. I haven't read it all yet. What is weird is the digestive tract evolved to operate largely on its own separate from the autonomic nervous system. It has it's own system of communication. Still all the systems of the body are linked together. It would be interesting to study the evolution of the digestive tract and metabolism.

The equine one isnt as tastey
![]() On par with price, I've spoken to the people who make it who say the equine one can be consumed by humans, but the ingredients used are not human grade. Plenty of people taking the horse one with benefits anyway haha. |
