I used to pride myself on having an excellent memory - even remembering small details from years ago. Now, after being on meds, I can't even remember what my girlfriend told me to make for dinner in the morning - by the time work is out. Has anyone else felt like the meds affect their cognitive function?

I take lamictal and abilify, does anyone know if either are known for causing this?

I could just be getting older and forgetful but I really think its the meds..

Lamictal is rather notorious for causing memory issues in some people. I can take it without that problem, but my husband cannot. Any dose higher than about 100mg causes serious memory loss and cognitive problems. I finally convinced his psychiatrist that was what was going on and she took him off the lamictal. His memory has greatly improved.
Thanks for this!

I had this issue with Lamictal. Within a couple of days of stopping things were back to normal

I have been having a similar problem! I am on Lamictal (200) and Vyvanse (60) /[or Adderall 20 PRN] and wasn't sure if either could be causing the issue. I told my psych about it and she brushed it off as a depression symptom. I have had depression for almost 4 years and never had this...I have been on Lamictal and Vyvanse for probably 1.5 years and had no issues prior. It has been going on since around March and came on suddenly. I will start talking and forget what I was saying or walk into a room and forget what I was doing, forget where I put things or what I was supposed to do, word retrieval is bad when I used to have no issue, and I can't remember what happened when (for ex: I remember I ate cheese and crackers but don't know if it was today or yesterday), etc. It is actually really distressing and irritating! I don't know if I can risk going off the lamictal as this is the first time in a while that I have been pretty stable and this is the least amount of meds I have been on in a long time. I have no idea what to do!

I also suffer from BP1. I have been on Lamictal for I think eight years now and slowly over the years my cognition has declined. I use to take pride in my photographic memory, which is slowly disappearing. Well anyway my pdoc added Topamax because I was scared of weight gain from Seroquel. At 100 mg I was having some serious cognitive problems. I asked my pdoc what the heck is going on? Hopefully I explain this right and I understood him right. So Lamictal and Topamax are used for epilepsy but thankfully help us out as well. Our BP brains are constantly having mini seizures without the physical effect. So these meds slow things down. I also personally believe these meds have this side effect, but unfortunately I need the meds. I decided to definitely stay on the Lamictal, and when I lowered the Topamax down to 50 mg I noticed a huge difference. Hopefully I made sense.
