I've been on a low dose of zyprexa for approx 1 year. It worked at first, but as the year has gone on, the beneficial effects have decreased. I have just had my dose incresed to 10mg. This is good on one hand, but on the other I have one particular concern. I put on 15 kgs on the low dose (I was a v small person before taking it) and, while I'm not yet overweight, I'm concerned I will put on even more weight. I'm wondering if anyone knows whether the increased dose will adversely affect my weight?

the medication itself will not increase your weight. what happens is it increases your appetite which causes you to eat more and then you gain weight. so if you are mindful about how much you are eating i dont think it becomes a problem. i know that is easier said than done. when i was first put on seroquel i would take it and my stomach would alert to me that i was hungry, even if i had just ate. exercise and a healthy diet will do a lot to counteract the appetite increase side effect in anti-psychotics

According to my pdoc, antipsychotics - and olanzapine/zyprexa in particular - actually change your metabolic system which is why you gain weight.
I don't know if you will gain more weight with the raise in dosage. |

I just found some info on a med website. The amount taken does impact on weight.
