Can anyone tell me pros/cons of the antipsychotics that they've taken? I am meeting w/ my PDOC today and since the abilify isn't working (and Latuda didn't either) - I wanted to go in knowing a little bit of good/bad about some of the other ones.

Thank you!

Since Latuda and Abilify are out of the running for you. The only others I have experience with at Riseridal and Seroquel.

Risperidal saved my life - I was given it during involuntary IP and it brought me out of psychosis as advertised. I was on 4 mg of it for about 7 months. Decent - controlled mania. Made me a little hungry, which I actually enjoyed. Maybe too much brain fog, but not unbearable. We tried going to Seroquel XR 150 for a few days, but I freaked out and went running back to Risperidal 4.

The only other AAPs in my resume are Abilify and Latuda. These are the top two I have tried. Latuda is really the ticket, but to get it to work right, I have to go through 5 rough weeks and be fully compliant, ie taking it with at least 350 calories at the same time every day.

Please let us know what you go with. Thanks,

moogs

Besides Abilify and Latuda, the only other AAP I have experience with is Seroquel. I've been on 400 mg (split 200 mg 2x per day) for almost a year now. It works excellent on my mixed episodes and okay on hypomania. Didn't do a darned thing for depression, so my pdoc added in Abilify to help with that.

I gained a tiny bit of weight on Seroquel, but nothing like some folks say they've gained. It did increase my appetite, but since prior to starting it, I wasn't eating at all, that's probably a good thing. It definitely improved my sleep as well. The thing I learned with Seroquel is that you have to get to a high enough dose that you get past the extreme drowsiness. For me, at anything below 150 mg, it completely knocks me out, but as I went up in dosage, the drowsiness decreased. Also, for me, it caused extreme dry mouth, nose, and eyes...but that went away after a few months and getting to the higher dose. My experience has been that the majority of the side effects occur at a lower dose.

Has anyone tried the typicals? I don't think my doc likes to prescribe those. I'd be open to trying anything.

Latuda made me completely flat - like I didn't care about anything - was seriously like a lump on a log.

Abilify did work for a bit but then I got manic so clearly it didn't work enough?

Lots of people seem to enjoy Saphris and Invega. Also, Geodon.

I am curious about some BP treatments like Trileptal and Mirapex. I'll PM you a link.

Typicals usually have much worse side effects and risks. Not sure though.

Same thing happened with me on Abilify. It worked great for about a month and then it sent me in to a bad mixed episode. Pdoc had me reduce the Abilify by half and I leveled out again pretty quickly. I'm tolerating it well now, but I think that if I stay on it, I'll have to be constantly adjusting the dose up or down depending on how I'm feeling. Depressed - go up in the dose. Hypomanic/Mixed/Manic - go down in the dose.

Haven't tried any of the typicals...not sure my pdoc would go there since the Seroquel is overall working really well for me and just needs a boost when I'm depressed. I tend to be mixed most often.

Abilify
Pros: None
Cons: Made me manic and gave me terrible akathisia

Seroquel
Pros: None
Cons: Made me feel crazy anxious oddly enough and had stiff muscles, got off it quickly

Risperdal
Pros: Got rid of psychosis
Cons: Wore off by the middle/end of the day

Invega Sustenna
Pros: 117 IM once a month, very convenient, keeps psychosis and agitation completely away.
Cons: None

Zyprexa
Pros: Good for times when paranoia revs up
Cons: Some weight gain

Good luck!

Abilify also has made me super restless - I feel like I have to move my arms and legs continuously - plus I'm always cracking my fingers or like wringing my wrists out, etc.

abilify made me super agitated and restless and gave me akathisia. haldol made me feel so stiff it was unbearable. clozaril made me heavily sedated and pee my bed. seroquel makes u gain weight but helps my anxiety and is useful for me as a prn. risperdal pills got rid of my psychosis mostly but i had trouble taking them on a contiunued basis. risperdal consta ran out quickley and hurt like hell to get injected. invega sustenna got rid of psychosis but the shot would wear out too soon. right now i am on invega pills, 12mg a day. since i have little to no trouble taking my meds consistently now things have been really good on this med for me. only downside to invega is that i got increased prolactin levels and lost my period for six months. because of that i take metformin now which reverses that side effect, so now i do get my periods.

I really wish you well on whatever your Pdoc wants to try next.

I don't have luck with antipsychotics. I get side effects from almost all of them. I just went back to zyprexa. It does cause me weight gain, but Im going to fight that and accept that it is the only Anti-P that doesn't give me really bad side effects.

I hope you find whats right for you soon!!!

She decided to try me on Lithium which scares the crap outta me. I am waiting on my blood tests to come back before I can start it.
