Hi, I'm 17 years old and I currently take Lithium, Vyvance, Latuda, Saphris, Lamictal, Neurontin, Klonopin, Adderall (fast release), Trazadone, occasional Zofran, and no matter how much I exercise and eat healthy, I keep gaining weight. Gaining weight is my #1 trigger for panic attacks, self harm, isolation, and many other unwanted things. It triggers suicidal thoughts, urges, and attempts. I absolutely CANNOT tolerate weight gain. How do I climb out of this inevitable dark hole?

Hello, TheCuddlyDuckling, and welcome to Psych Central! That's a good question. Alas, some of the meds you take (seems like a whole lot of meds to take!) are known to cause weight gain. Have you talked to your doc about what weight gain does to you? Maybe some meds can be adjusted.

I took Remeron one time and went from a size 12 to a size 18 over one summer. I asked to go off of it. And I was able to lose the weight.

Do you exercise and watch what you eat? I suspect you do. I ended up counting calories. And that helped some.

You might want to consider talking to a therapist about this issue, too, if you haven't already. Okay?

Your on many medications that can cause weight gain. If you can't make med changes then you have to work with what you have..

Exercise and tracking every calorie you ingest is probably the only way to help yourself from gaining.

Increase your water intake that can help you feel full and less likely to snack between meals. Finding a good balance with foods that will keep you feeling fuller longer and also help you feel that your not being deprived of tasty foods.

Good luck

First thing I would do is tell my pdoc the effects weight gain has on me, and then question if I absolutely have to be on all those 10 meds... Like isn't there a law regarding how large your cocktail can be?

Many psych meds cause metabolic syndrome, which sadly means it screws up your metabolism forever, making weight loss next to impossible for some.

It's imperative that your pdoc grasps this vicious cycle: meds make you wanna eat the furniture, fat makes you unstable, pdoc gives you more meds.

Rinse and repeat.

Good luck
