It is my understanding that anti-anxiety meds as a rule have a sedative effect....so I doubt there is an anti-anxiety med out there that wouldn't make one sleepy....how about something from the health food store?

Valerian and passiflora are both herbal and reasonably effective though it does depend on severity of symptoms.
I take tricyclics (lofepramine), I think they help a little without turning me into a zombie. I took Trazodone and they knocked me out like a general anaesthetic ! I wasn't anxious but barely conscious either. Remember that the prescription meds for anxiety can sometimes be difficult to come off, lead to dependence. Be very wary of SSRI's. They made me like a cat on a hot tin roof ! |

I've gotten good anti-anxiety effects from Neurontin (Gabapentin), without feeling drowsy (after the first few days), but don't take it any more. It does take a little while (few weeks) to build up in your system, but isn't addictive.

I would recommend you start with a low dose of an SSRI. If sleep is a problem use remeron instead. If you get edgy at first a little clonazepam for a week or so will help, and that problem usually goes away. You need to give these meds a good 6-8 weeks at a good dose to see if they will work. Some others that can be added or tried if you fail ADs are gabapentin or pregabalin, both have very low addiction potential. Exercise is one of the BEST treatments for most anxiety disorders
