I have decided to try reducing my high dose of Effexor and was wondering what type of side effects I might expect?

I currently take 600 mg. and plan on reducing it by 150 mg. I think the dose is high enough to offset much of the side effects of getting off the effexor, but was wondering what I might be looking at?

Thank you

I can't say for sure, but I just visited my pdoc and he's bringing me back down to 150 from 225 since it seems to have put me into a hypo manic phase. Are you doing this yourself, or is this from your pdoc?

Doing this myself. I feel like I am on a s***load of meds and need to begin tapering off some of them. I currently do ECT every 2 weeks and that should help some of the side effects.........I hope

I strongly advise against trying to reduce a medication, especially Effexor, with the support and advice of your proscriber. Effexor is known for having a particularly bad discontinuation syndrome.

And you are proposing a 25% decrease. That's huge. Most times when I've been reducing a med it's been done in 10% increments. That exact percentage might not be possible given that Effexor comes in capsules, but you could ask your Dr. to prescribe part of your prescription as 75mg or even 37.5 mg capsules, and go down by those smaller increments.

I agree with splitimage.

I have been on Effexor (150 mg/day) for a while - it has helped me.

My psychiatrist told me that should we decide that I should discontinue (this is not a current option), it should be done slowly with close medical supervision.

The side-effects of unsupervised discontinuation from Effexor can be horrendous.

That is too large a decrease. You really need to have your pdoc on board to guide you through this. Even 75mg can be way too fast for many people. Please call your pdoc. ECT will not offset the withdrawal effects which are very physical.

I'm going to have to agree with everyone else. My dose was 225 split by 150 at night and 75 in the morning. I'm going down to 187.5 for the next few weeks, before I'm back to 150. I would discuss this issue with your pdoc.

Absolutely NO. Some people can actually reduce that med rather quickly and it is fine, but many can not.

I was on 150 mg and decreased to half. I did not get brain zaps, sweats or upset stomach which is common. But I got this absolutely odd sensation of DREAD. It was not anxiety. It was not depression. It was like someone switched the whole world to HELL and I had to live there. That is the best way I can describe it.
