Hey everyone,
I know this is probably something for the psych meds forumm but it seems like there aren't a lot of people on there sometimes and I was hoping to get a lot of different answers/ people responding.
I started taking buspar I think in February. Since then I've missed my period for six months. I got it at the end of Feb and then not again til last week when it did come back. My primary Dr. did test my prolacton levels which is a hormone to do with stopping your period and it was high. He also was incredibly hung up on me taking a pregnancy test though I've never had sex in my life LOL!
Anyway he said it was likely my psych meds could be causing this and the assistant that works here and talks with the doctors agreed. It's more common with antipsychotics. I'm in addition to the buspar taking Lamyctol and efexor and ativan PRN.
Anyway went to the gyno yesterday. Who was incredibly concerned about this period thing. I'm of the mind that I couldn't care less about it. I was very happy not to have it for six months and was really hoping it would stay away forever. Anyway she said it was impossible that the meds could be causing it. I wonder though if she even knows anything at all about these psych meds. But yeah didn't like how she wrote that off. So I have to take an ultrasound. I'm hoping as it came this month it'll just come next month and I can say things are back to normal so leave me alone.
But was wondering if anyone else has experienced this with buspar/ the combo of meds I'm on though of course I know everyone is different. If they start talking about me taking birth control to regulate it I'm saying no. I can't even imagine what that will do to my emotions or how it will interact with the delicate balance of chemicals in my brain we finally got mostly right with these meds. Thoughts?

My periods have never been regular, so I can't really comment on how my meds may have affected them. I have PCOS, and I now take birth control to regulate my periods. Having periods SUCKS, but at least I know when to expect them now. Hope they can get things figured out for you!
Thanks for this!

Yeah that was quite the surprise last week when that happened I got my period I was like nooo! It's a good thing I wasn't doing anything important. Just lay around for the first three days of it. I think my body was like what the hell? Hopefully it will come the same time next month and things will be cool.

Hi Kat605, My periods have always been very regular, except that yes, a few times when I started a new med my period would come a week or 10 days late (and I was freaked out about my periods being slightly off schedule!).

6 months? YIKES!! Hun, that's way too long. I highly doubt it's psych meds that have caused such a delay in your period. At least, I've never heard of such a thing.

I agree with your gyn - believe me, I know how nice it is not to have periods BUT our bodies menstruate for important reasons. Not shedding your uterine lining regularly can cause very serious issues, eventually. Not to mention that your endocrine system must be really whacked up at this point!

Last winter I was having periods every 2 weeks (I'm 52 and in perimenopause). My gyn prescribed a low-dose hormone pill to regulate my periods and I was really worried, afraid that the pills would cause my emotions to go haywire. Well, the pills do regulate my periods very well and I haven't noticed ANY problems at all.

Please do follow through with your gyn's advice and find out what's going on.
Thanks for this!

I had a problem with Latuda. It raised my prolactin levels to where I started lactating. Which made me skip periods too. I slowly went off the Latuda but it took 5 months for the lactating to stop and for my period to return. So it is possible on some psych meds.
