My doc started me on gabapentin 300mg three times a day.. I stopped taking it because it makes me feel dumb, dizzy, tired, and just awful.

Is my dose too high? I'm calling the nurse line now but I'm fairly sure my doc just didn't do his research as he asked ME what dose I wanted, like I know that.

Hi,

Sorry you are struggling. What symptoms are you seeking relief from with Gabapentin? I used to take 600 for anxiety. I don't think 900 is super high as the dosage can go up to 5400mg a day for some conditions.

Thanks,

moogs

I have a bad back, so it will help that and we want it to treat the anxiety and even out the moods.

I used to take Gabapentin for chronic pain, and I'm pretty sure that I started out at 150 mg 3 times/day. I ended up going up to 800 mg 3 times/day, but it can take a while for your body to adjust to the medication.

I'd ask your doctor if there's any reason why you shouldn't drop your dosage to 150 mg 3x/day and then increase gradually. If you have tablets, you can just break them in half.

The starting dose info. that I saw when I did a web search said start at 300 mg 3 times/day for epilepsy and listed 10-15 mg/kg of body weight 3 times/day as a suggested starting dose for other conditions.

Thanks for telling me.. I wish I had tablets but they gave me 300mg capsules. How frustrating!

I was given it for Fibro at 300mg a day for a week then 600mg for a week then landed on 900 mg a day .. I was pretty stoned when I first started it , but with in a couple days that effect wore off and my body adjusted.

Essentially I found that it wasn't helpful for my pain so I stopped it.

I hope its helpful for you.

I've taken it before but it wasn't prescribed for me. The joys of being a vet tech.

I've taken it before, I was taking 1800mg per day at the high point. It really didn't do much for me overall. I saw no noticeable improvement on any of the symptoms that it was supposed to help.

It's not a high dose, as others have said, but if it doesn't help at all, I'd get off of it. It's also an anti seizure med and going off of it from high doses after a long time may be problematic. I've been on a relatively high dose for about 15 years now and when I tried to go off of it I had severe problems with neuropathy.

It does help. My psychiatrist called and wants me to take it only at bedtime. Which is not how that works. It doesn't do anything unless you take it 3 times a day. I am getting a new pdoc, this guy is incompotent.

I wish you good luck with your next pdoc. Yeah, I haven't heard anyone saying just to take it at night. I take my doses between 6 to 8 hours apart.

Exactly. That's how it works! And they called back and woke me at 7am. Rude.

I tried taking it at an even lower dosage three times a day a good while back. Had terrible side effects.....

I am currently trying it again for my Fibro pain.....but my GP started me on a really low dose only at night (100 mg) to try and build up my tolerance for the side effects.

Even at the low dosage and only at night, I do benefit from it. And, will most likely have the dosage increased at the next visit.

The doctors usually prescribe doses of 300 bid as a starting dose.

I tried 300 mg once a day. I couldn't tolerate it even on that dosage. I guess we're all different. I sure did not care for the dizziness much.

I called my pdoc and expressed my annoyance at their resistance to prescribing a lower dose.

They called a dose of 100mg 3 times a day into the pharmacy. I just gotta go pick it up.
